The filmmakers of Mentega Terbang face a four-day trial from 12 to 15 October 2026 over charges of “harming the religious feelings of others” under Section 298 of the Penal Code, raising serious concerns about freedom of expression and artistic freedom in Malaysia.

On 26 May, Amnesty Int launched its annual report on death sentences and executions.
This WDADP, we reflect on Malaysia’s progress, with new death sentences reaching a historic low in 2025. But justice remains incomplete as long as people continue to face the death penalty.
1/ This World Day Against the Death Penalty, we recognise the progress towards abolition across Southeast Asia.
Malaysia’s recent legal reforms have reduced the number of people under sentence of death from more than 1,200 to around 100 by the end of 2025.
2/ As Joshua Ericsson, Executive Director of Amnesty International Malaysia, said, “The number of executing countries across ASEAN has steadily decreased.” The momentum must continue towards full abolition.
The people of Myanmar deserve to have their voices heard. Malaysia must not turn a blind eye to the human rights situation in Myanmar.
