Uterine prolapse occurs when weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments allow the uterus to descend into the vagina. It is most common after vaginal childbirth and becomes more frequent with aging and menopause.
Symptoms may include pelvic pressure, a bulging sensation, and changes in bladder or bowel function. On examination, some degree of prolapse is present in many women over fifty, even when symptoms have been mild or dismissed as normal aging.
Treatment ranges from pelvic floor exercises and pessaries to surgery, depending on the stage and the degree of discomfort.
