What should have been an innocent bag of peppermint humbugs became one of Victorian Britain’s worst accidental poisonings.
Sweets sold at a market in Bradford, Yorkshire, had accidentally been made with arsenic, after it was mistaken for a cheap substitute for sugar. Around 20 people died and more than 200 became seriously ill, many of them children.
The tragedy exposed the dangerously unregulated food trade of Victorian Britain.
The Punch cartoon “The Great Lozenge-Maker” appeared just weeks later, showing Death making sweets beside jars of arsenic.
