A hurricane disrupted our plans for this year's coaches' clinic, but we were still able to pivot and complete the presentations online. We also broke registration records, with nearly 250 participants this year! My thanks to @Coach_Alameda @mcgriff_tyrone, Elizabeth Greg, @wilking_j, @AndrewRamjit, and @SirDowdy for sharing their expertise.

So let me get this straight... A parent enters a locker room and assaults the head coach. His assistant steps in to defend him... and somehow the District finds a way to put the blame on the assistant? What an absolute failure of leadership in Seminole County. @SCPSInfo
🚨 WHO PROTECTS THE COACH? We waited a week before speaking publicly because we wanted to see how this situation would play out. We also reached out directly to the coach involved. He thanked us for reaching out and informed us that he would be handling the situation himself. We respect that decision and will respect his space. But respecting his decision does not mean the Florida Coaches Coalition is going to stay quiet about the ramifications of what happened. A coach was attacked in his own locker room by an angry parent following a game. A member of his coaching staff stepped in to defend him. Days later, both coaches resigned in the middle of the season. And after all of that, blame is being directed toward the coaches? ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Let's stop dancing around the bigger issue. HOW DID AN ANGRY PARENT GET ACCESS TO A COACH IN HIS LOCKER ROOM IN THE FIRST PLACE? Where was the security? Where were the safeguards? Who was responsible for making sure coaches could safely leave the field and enter their own locker room? Because apparently, after asking coaches to work countless hours for pennies, teach, mentor, supervise, fundraise, manage programs, communicate with parents, handle equipment, travel, develop young people and carry the expectations of entire communities, we're now supposed to add PERSONAL SECURITY to their job descriptions. At what point do we finally say enough? A coach should not have to defend himself from a parent at work. Another coach should not have to decide whether to stand by and watch his colleague be attacked or physically intervene because adequate protection wasn't there. And neither should have to walk away from their program days later while questions are being raised about their actions. If your first response after a coach is attacked at work is to figure out how the coach is somehow responsible, you are part of the problem. This is exactly how we lose good coaches. We tell them to sacrifice more. Give more. Work longer. Take less. Deal with increasingly hostile behavior from adults. And apparently, when things cross the line from verbal abuse to physical violence, they're supposed to deal with that too. NO. This is bigger than one coach. This is bigger than one school. And this is bigger than one district. Every coach in Florida should be paying attention. Coaches have a right to go to work, coach their student-athletes and return home to their families without wondering whether an angry adult will be waiting for them outside a locker room. And if the systems currently in place are not enough to provide reasonable protections for coaches, then those systems need to change. So we're going to do something about it. Coaches in Florida deserve protection. During this upcoming legislative session, the Florida Coaches Coalition will work with lawmakers to pursue stronger protections for coaches and address what happens when their safety is threatened while performing their jobs. Because protecting coaches cannot simply be a talking point after something terrible happens. It needs to be an expectation. To every coach in Florida: We see you. We hear you. And we will fight for you. COACHES DESERVE PROTECTION. NOT BLAME. #FloridaCoaches

Florida coaches know the routine. 😂 You wake up and check the weather. Check it again before school. Again before lunch. Again at 2:00. Again at 2:15 because somehow the 80% chance of thunderstorms is now 20%. Then at 2:30 it’s back to 90%. Practice at 3:00. At this point, the weather app isn’t an app. It’s an assistant coach. Somebody get the weather app a polo and put it in the staff picture. 😂 #OnlyCoachesUnderstand #FloridaCoaches

Here’s one nobody wants to say anymore: Winning matters. If it didn’t, why keep score? Why have playoffs? Rankings? Championships? Trophies? Why practice all week trying to get better? Somewhere along the way, we became so afraid of sounding “too competitive” that we started pretending winning is just some nice little bonus at the end. Stop it. You can develop great kids AND expect them to compete. You can teach character AND demand excellence. You can care about academics, sportsmanship and doing things the right way AND still hate losing. Losing doesn’t make you a failure. But becoming comfortable with losing? That’s a problem. Winning isn’t everything. But if winning doesn’t matter, why the hell are we keeping score? #SayingTheQuietPartOutLoud #FloridaCoaches #HighSchoolSports

Before most people hit snooze, they’re already putting in miles. No packed stadium. No Friday night lights. No band. No student section. No halftime show. Just an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a course and a group of athletes willing to work when almost nobody is watching. And somewhere behind them is a coach who got there even earlier. Cross country coaches, we see you. The miles may be quiet. The impact isn’t. Tag a cross country coach and tell them thank you! #FloridaCoaches #CrossCountry #HighSchoolSports

Everybody loves to say high school sports are about developing young people. Until the scoreboard gets ugly. Then suddenly character, discipline, academics, accountability, graduation rates and doing things the right way aren’t enough. So here’s the uncomfortable question: If a coach consistently loses games but runs a clean program, develops good kids and represents the school the right way… should they keep their job? And before you answer, understand what you’re really deciding: Is winning part of the job… or is winning THE job? Because if wins and losses ultimately determine whether a coach gets fired, maybe we need to stop pretending otherwise. Coaches, sound off. 👇 #CoachesSoundOff #FloridaCoaches #HighSchoolSports

Game cancelled less than 10 DAYS before kickoff. Scramble to find an opponent. End up going OUT OF STATE to play a nationally ranked team. And then WIN THE DAMN THING IN OVERTIME. 😤 That’s Florida football. HELL of a win for @john_p34 and @VeniceIndianFB. That’s the kind of story people will talk about YEARS from now. Straight-up high school football folklore. LEGENDARY. 🔥 – at St Cloud, FL

Every coach knows this trap. 😂 “It’ll only take a few minutes after practice.” Sure. Then somehow it’s 11:47 PM, you’ve answered 14 emails, finished tomorrow’s practice plan, talked to three parents, checked grades, reviewed film and started questioning every life decision that led you here. But hey… Just a few minutes. 💀 #OnlyCoachesUnderstand #FloridaCoaches

This type of misinformation gets a direct response... @JillElizabethT “Social media show for 0” is an interesting choice of words. @PayFLCoaches helped change Florida law. It took effect July 1. District implementation is happening now. It's August. You've been around long enough to know the process. But if we really want to discuss social media shows, maybe we should talk about post-grad academies charging families thousands, flooding social media with graphics, and selling “exposure” to families desperate to get their kid another opportunity. Now THAT conversation could be educational. 🍿 – at St Cloud, FL

Sad … it was such a social media show for 0 - I don’t know anyone that has gotten any benefit and any pay increase 😭

Defend your work all you want. I'll do the same for ours. Implying this was some “social media show” for likes is where you crossed the line. People have spent years fighting for this in Tallahassee, and we’re STILL fighting district by district to get it implemented. You made your point months ago: teachers need to be paid. Nobody has argued otherwise. But I’m not going to sit quietly while you shit on people who finally stood up for coaches after some of the same teacher unions you champion spent 50 years saying virtually nothing about them. You weren’t in the rooms. You weren’t part of the fight. So don’t reduce the work of the people who were.

“That’s how it’s always been” is a hell of an excuse from people whose job is to make it better. 🎯
🚨 We’re done pretending this is a level playing field. One school is practicing on a field that should have been replaced 10 years ago. Their coaches are begging for equipment, fundraising for uniforms, squeezing kids onto buses 🚌 and wondering whether the budget can even cover transportation. Across town, another program has pristine facilities 🏟️, resources most public schools could only dream about, financial aid and scholarship opportunities to help attract students, and the money to get wherever they need to go. Then the adults running high school athletics look at those two programs and say: 🏆 Perfect. Go compete for the same championship. Give us a break. 🙄 The problem isn’t the private school taking advantage of every resource available to them. They should. The problem is the people in charge who can look at two completely different realities and continue pretending they represent competitive equality. 🚌 If one program is worried about whether the bus is getting approved while another is deciding which upgraded facility to use, STOP CALLING IT A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. 📢 At some point, competitive balance has to mean more than putting everybody in the same bracket and pretending the logo on the jersey is the only difference. Public schools deserve better than being told to “compete harder” in a system that refuses to acknowledge what they’re competing against. 🎯 If you’re responsible for competitive balance and you’re comfortable calling this fair, the problem isn’t the schools anymore. It’s you. 🎤 #SayingTheQuietPartOutLoud #FloridaCoaches #HighSchoolSports

Parents are going to complain. That's part of coaching. But when a complaint about playing time skips the coach and lands on an administrator's desk, who creates the bigger problem? The parent who went around the coach? Or the administrator who gave them a seat, a box of tissues, and immediately entertained it? One complains about the culture. The other has the power to destroy it. What's worse? #CoachesSoundOff #FloridaCoaches

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ARE BACK. 🏈 Tonight, stadium lights across Florida come back on. But long before the lights, the crowds, and the first whistle, coaches have been putting in the work. Coaches MAKE players believe in themselves. They MAKE teams believe in each other. They MAKE young people realize they’re capable of more than they thought possible. Wins matter. Championships matter. But what coaches MAKE lasts a whole lot longer than Friday night. To every coach across Florida kicking off another season: good luck. Go make an impact. We’ll keep fighting for the people who make it happen. #PayFLCoaches #FloridaCoaches
