A behaviour perspective. teacherhead.com/2024/04/02/a… via @teacherhead. Occasionally re-read this to keep myself grounded. Admitting mistakes is painful. I made too many. I hope there are good lessons for people here.

The only way teaching practice changes is through building new habits. Teachers build new habits through deliberate practice. In our professional learning, we use scaffolded tasks to help colleagues make sense of the change that is needed in their own practice.

👇 The Do Now technique, popularised by @Doug_Lemov in Teach Like a Champion, has shaped my thinking about entry routines for years. The central idea is simple: students enter, find a short task waiting for them, and begin without directions from the teacher. But simple doesn’t mean easy to get right… Too long, and it eats into the lesson. Too easy, and it demands little thinking. If answers are visible while students are trying to recall them, that falls into copying, not retrieval. I built a checklist around four principles for designing and delivering an effective Do Now: Principle 1 - Embed it as a Routine: Same place, same format, same time limit. Students know exactly what to do and can begin independently. Principle 2 - Promote Retrieval Practice: When reviewing prior learning, students retrieve from memory. No notes. No answers visible. Questions require genuine effortful recall. Principle 3 - Use it to Check for Understanding: Circulate and actively observe while students work. Use what you see to identify misconceptions and decide what needs attention during the review. Principle 4 - Prime for New Learning: A Do Now doesn’t always have to retrieve previous content. It can preview today’s lesson or activate and build the background knowledge students will need next. That independence matters… It turns the start of the lesson into a predictable classroom routine: students are thinking from the moment they arrive, while the teacher can circulate, connect with students and respond. Drawing on the work of Dr Bill Rogers, this post explores the idea of behavioural leadership — guiding students towards better behaviour rather than relying on confrontation, punishment or reactive responses. It breaks down five practical strategies teachers can use in the moment... Oh and there’s also a free Classroom Management One-Page Guide included based on the work of @coachdowley newsletter.jamieleeclark.com…
