I have something to announce.
We ran a study to compare the jhānas to 5-MeO-DMT.
This was an ambitious undertaking by the Qualia Research Institute @QualiaRI , friends and collaborators. For practically all of May and June, a group of handpicked extraordinary people gathered in Tepoztlán, México: physicists, psychologists, neuroscientists, phenomenologists, advanced meditators, meditation researchers, philosophers of mind, and visual artists specializing in psychedelic replication.
It span over two dozen participants and eight weeks: instrument building, ten days of jhāna practice across three meditation sites, a week of 5-MeO-DMT, and then time to integrate and putting the pieces together to figure out the puzzle of consciousness.
We're now releasing the first tranche of what came out of it ♥️
Here is an example output: every animation we rated (comparing J1 and J3), in a tool where you can visualize the affinity of each animation to any two pairs of specific jhāna states and/or 5-MeO-DMT dose levels.

We're sitting on some potentially very viral material about consciousness from QRI's latest research. It's been a massive group effort, and we're still putting it together!
If you're a journalist interested in jhānas, 5-MeO-DMT, and new ways to visualize subjective experience, let's talk. Happy to share a private preview and explain why we think this could resonate with a much wider audience. It would be an auspicious time for us from a fundraising perspective. And the readers will be delighted, scientists will be intrigued, and curious kids shall be inspired.
So it's a win-win-win :-)

Finally published:
“Loops all the way up: Recurrency as an implementation-first primitive for consciousness”
There are 200+ theories of consciousness, mostly talking past each other. Despite their differences, most give central stage to one key notion: recurrence 🧠🔁

Is consciousness rich or sparse? The answer is unclear, but free verbal reports were recently suggested as a way to support the idea that experience is rich. Can they be used as evidence for richness? I’m excited to share our work claiming otherwise (a 🧵) doi.org/10.1093/nc/niae035
