AND THAT’S GAME! Angelo State secured the 2-0 win over St. Edward’s in their first game of the spring season.
The Hilltoppers return to their home pitch, Lewis-Chen Family Field for their second game of today’s doubleheader, this time against UMHB.
Dejavu? Maybe! The Rambelles score late again, this time with a clean shot by Madison Bourzikas to the upper right corner of the net. 2-0 for ASU!

Newbill weaved passes through two Hilltopper defenders in the box, but kicked the ball off to the right goal post and into Schlumbohm’s hands.
Rambelle defender Olivia Arauz blocked three attempts from Riley Knox, impeding the Hilltoppers’ chances of infiltrating the box.
The Rambelles are keeping the pressure up by the box, forcing the Hilltoppers back four to keep the ball in rotation until they could find a way to weave through the Rambelles’ offensive strides.
RAMBELLES RUN CUT SHORT!
Rainey Simmons showed up fast and hot from behind Rambelle Whitni Newbill, putting the ball back in Hilltopper possession after a tackle
Lilly Arellano with precision and confidence on the ball! She left the Rambelles confused with a couple of high touches on the ball.
Neither team has managed to find their way into the attacking third and solidify their presence over the first five minutes of the half.
The weather got a little warmer and so did the temperature on the field. Both the Rambelles and the Hilltoppers came in more aggressive for the second half — more vocal, more physical and more intentional.
And we’re back for the second half! Since it’s a spring scrimmage match, the halves are played in 30 minutes instead of 45.
CLOSE CHANCE BY THE HILLTOPPERS!
A connecting pass at the box from Rainey Simmons to Abigail Hall was crossed too wide, but sophomore striker Annie Rocha was waiting on the left side of the goal for her opportunity. Rocha’s kick met ASU’s Claire Stoermer’s hands.
Over the last ten matchups between the two teams, the Hilltoppers have a 2-7-1 record against ASU: two wins, seven losses and one tie.
With 15 minutes left in the first half, the Rambelles and Hilltoppers’ scoreboard still displays 0-0.
The Hilltoppers’ bench and junior goalkeeper Daria Schlumbohm have been extremely vocal when signaling openings and instructions for the players on the pitch.
Both teams are currently in the middle of a staff change, with the recent hiring of new Rambelles head coach Harold Munoz and with the Hilltoppers still searching for who will take veteran Nick Cowell’s spot as head coach.
Happy Saturday and happy women’s soccer game day!
The St. Edward’s women’s soccer team has kicked off its spring season on this brisk and beautiful Saturday afternoon with a matchup against the Angelo State University Rambelles.
