Huge thanks to @WatchPitch1 for hosting our founder, Porter Bayne, to discuss startup fundraising downs & ups! Lots of fun. Listen here at watchpitch.com/episode-14-po…
6/ Makes us want to paraphrase John Wanamaker and say, "Half of audience engagement works. The trouble is, publishers don't know which half." @jnelz @wearehearken
5/ And said broadcaster was a professional friend. So, a credible statement. But investors that will fund losses to publishers to subsidize growth are rare. And tracking engagement's revenue lift is expensive in itself.
4/ Many did say, though: "If you can pay us, we can prioritize it. We're scrambling for revenue." Was told a $0.10 CPM would be enough by a major broadcaster.
3/ PVs rise, too. But questions in mind of news orgs range from, "yes but wouldn't those readers engage anyway?" to "so?" to "why do we want engagement?" to "sold, love it, but why prioritize this over XYZ?" to "why should we trust your numbers?" (but they won't run own test)
2/ We've had our own challenges as an audience engagement platform. Months of A/B testing in front of millions of MUVs show that user retention is easily 8-10% when our platform is visible to readers.
1/ Bravely awesome of @wearehearken to invite journalistic access (@jnelz), as we wish other organizations of all types to do, too. It's risky but good to discuss complex things, and both startups and audience engagement are complex.
What @NiemanLab and @michellemanafy call "Clickbait and switch" is why we built our platform/content rec. It recommends the parts of an article people read, not a headline. see slide 5 drive.google.com/drive/u/1/f…
This is true. Improving retention matters since paywalls deter it for a large % of the audience. digiday.com/podcast/huffpost…

.@TaliaStroud says that when it comes to the comments section, framing is an issue.
If we only talk about the negative sides of moderation, she says, we’re “missing an opportunity between audiences and journalists.”

Answer: Sometimes. Especially if you like reading what bots have to say, and/or have a lot of time on your hands. Otherwise, Antenna can help. buff.ly/2DpBfXv
