"In recent years, so much has changed in the world. Looking back, I think of the times when Spain defended its principles despite immense pressure. It is important to remember why we are here today. This painting is more than art: it is a reminder that barbarism must never triumph over reason. Spain has stood for the idea that war is not inevitable, that some lives are not worth less than others, and that looking away is never an option. In Europe and in the rest of the world, these have not been easy times. When some chose to bet on bombs, Spain said no to war. When others demanded that 5% of GDP be spent on military buildup, Spain said no to cuts in welfare, not a cent. When silence was easier, Spain denounced the genocide in Gaza. Spain continues to defend coexistence, because together we are stronger. And this painting reminds us that even in the darkest moments, the light of our values must remain visible."
