Not wise to publish fake polls. In terms of the Electoral Act is a criminal offence to publish any false information with the intention of influencing the conduct or outcome of an election. it carries a maximum 10 year prison sentence.
BREAKING NEWS: IPRG POLL, a week before voting!
IPRG POLL puts the @MYANC at 43% in the City of Tshwane.
IPGR is a POLL done by independent pollsters [qualified University Professors and professionals in Political Science] - they're not working for a political party like the rest.
I am told they use bigger samples for predictions. At least there are now new players in the polling environment in South Africa who look at all dimensions.

7 days, 750 kilometres and more than 10,000 metres of climbing would be an enormous challenge for any cyclist but for Hein Wagner, the journey is about so much more than reaching the finish line.

Jeanette, I am going to give you a very long response to address your confusion. Bear with me because I’ll start with historical origins of the usage. The terminology of “leftwing”(often it labels itself as “progressive”) and “rightwing” (often labeled “conservative” - although the true opposite of “conservative” is “liberal”) has been part of the South African political parlance at least for the past 116 years.
It first appeared in South African politics when the Labour Party (1910) defined itself as “the left”. But that mettle was taken over in 1921 when the press of the day (disapprovingly) referred to the Communist Party of South Africa as a leftwing organization.
But the origins of the left-right labeling harks back to the French Revolution in 1789 with the left-right seating arrangement of opposing parties in the National Assembly.
In apartheid South Africa “rightwing” described hardline Afrikaner nationalists and conservatives (eg Conservative Party and AWB - sometimes referred to as the “far-right”) while “left” covered anti-apartheid, socialist, communists, and ANC-aligned forces. That is why White anti-apartheid activists referred to themselves as “White lefties” even when they didn’t necessarily subscribe to a socialist/communist ideology.
Common left-wing characteristics
• Prioritize economic and social equality (reducing disparities via redistribution, progressive taxation, expanded welfare, public services, and labor protections).
• Favor greater government role in the economy (regulation of markets, support for unions, public ownership or strong oversight in key sectors).
• Emphasize progressive social change (expanded civil rights on issues like gender, sexuality, race, and immigration; secularism or reduced traditional religious influence in public life).
• Prefer international cooperation, multilateral institutions, and open borders relative to national sovereignty.
• Often stress environmental protection, climate policy, and collective solutions over individual or market-driven ones.
Common right-wing characteristics
• Prioritize individual liberty, free markets, property rights, and limited government (lower taxes, deregulation, private enterprise, and fiscal restraint).
• Emphasize tradition, social order, national identity/sovereignty, and cultural continuity (including stronger roles for religion, family structures, or national history in public life).
• Favor law and order, strong national defense, and controlled immigration.
• Tend toward social conservatism or skepticism of rapid cultural change on issues like gender, sexuality, and social norms.
• Prefer national interests and free-market approaches over extensive redistribution or supranational governance.
These are broad tendencies, not universal rules. Real-world parties (and voters) frequently mix them—for example, economically left but socially conservative, or free-market but culturally progressive. Economic left/right and cultural left/right axes often diverge, which is why simple left-right maps have limits. Labels also shift: what counts as “right” or “left” in one country or decade can differ elsewhere. For instance, it will surprise you that some of the Russian media speak of the Communist Party of Russia as being conservative (rightist) because it is fighting to conserve values of a past era, whereas in the days of the USSR the same Communist Party was the mother of all leftwing parties.

I am currently so confused as to who is left and who is right. Reminds me of a lecturer who said of a colleague "Hy is so ver regs, hy staan links van Eugene Terreblanche." I can't keep up.

1. I can only offer you a paraphrase of what Obama said to Ohio voters: There is a time when an election comes along that feels a little different; an election where people are so ready for something new, so hungry for something better; so sick and tired of being sick and tired;

1. On 4 November 2026, in 10 days, JHB goes to the polls to elect its mayor. I have previously argued that Helen Zille is the only sensible candidate to vote for in this race. This would be a vote for the DA. The importance of this vote was underscored on a recent visit to JHB.

I spent three days in JHB, most of the robots don’t work. The water is more like champagne in colour when I had it, on the last day I HAD NO water in my hotel room. JHB deserves a government that works for all its people. Come on guys, SOUTH AFRICA needs JHB to WORK.🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

@CityTshwane No water. Again. No advance notice. Again. So what’s the story this time? Refuse bins haven’t been collected either. No communication on that too. The streetlights I’ve reported and have multiple “reference numbers” for (as you’ve so many times “advised” me to get) remain in disrepair. So what’s up over there? Happy to say, at least your billing department seems to be working perfectly - just received my monthly bills via SMS and email today.

ANC leader in the City of Cape Town, Ndithini Tyhido, has resigned from council just days before the local government elections, throwing the party into disarray. Sources say Tyhido's surprise resignation came just a day before he was due to face disciplinary proceedings for failing to attend council meetings. Had he been found guilty and subsequently removed from office by the MEC, the decision could have affected his political future after the elections. He remains an ANC member and leader in the metro.
