🎮 The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons — My Review
Just wrapped up my Switch 2 playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and I've got some thoughts!
For context, I actually played this game when it originally launched 25 years ago, but I haven't touched it since. So while this wasn't technically my first playthrough, much of the experience felt surprisingly fresh.
🟢 THE GOOD:
One thing that immediately stood out was how well the world design, exploration, and item progression have held up over the years. The map feels thoughtfully constructed, and the various tools and abilities you acquire throughout your adventure fit naturally into the gameplay.
If you've played Oracle of Ages or Link's Awakening, you'll feel right at home here. The familiar dungeon structure, puzzles, exploration, and steady progression capture much of what made this era of Zelda so enjoyable.
I also really appreciated the inclusion of several familiar faces from Ocarina of Time and other Zelda entries. Seeing those characters reimagined and incorporated into this game's world was a charming touch that added a little extra personality to the adventure.
And of course, the ability to manipulate the seasons is a fantastic concept. Watching the environment change and discovering how those changes affect exploration and puzzle-solving remains one of the game's most creative features.
🔴 THE BAD:
My biggest frustration, BY FAR, was the item management system.
Like several Zelda titles from this era, you're limited to two equipped items at a time. That might sound manageable, but when the game regularly requires you to cycle between four or five different items within a matter of minutes, constantly opening the inventory becomes incredibly tedious.
Certain abilities, particularly the Power Bracelet, really should have functioned as permanent upgrades rather than occupying one of your precious item slots. It's an outdated design choice that unnecessarily interrupts an otherwise enjoyable gameplay loop.
My other criticism is a little harder to quantify.
Despite its clever seasonal mechanics, enjoyable dungeons, and familiar Zelda charm, I never felt that Oracle of Seasons quite captured the same magic as Link's Awakening, a game that released eight years earlier. There's a certain atmosphere, personality, and emotional quality to Link's Awakening that makes it feel genuinely special. While Oracle of Seasons is absolutely a worthy entry in the franchise, I found myself appreciating its gameplay more than I was falling in love with its world.
Overall:
8.5/10 game, probably top 2 title for me so far this year, and a GREAT entry game for anyone who wants to experience The Legend of Zelda but may need to use an emulator to do so.
If the Ocarina of Time remake was releasing on all consoles, would it have a chance at winning GOTY over GTA VI??
