How does Ukraine (whose invasion in 2014 and 2022 completely upended global order) and Syria (bloodiest war of the 21st century, largest refugee crisis, European political upheaval, Russia and Iran adventurism) get excluded from this type of litmus test?
Hasan: "What does it say for your credibility on foreign policy issues if you've got the two biggest foreign policy issues of our lifetime, Iraq and Gaza, both wrong?" Yglesias: "I don't know that those were the two biggest foreign policy issues of our lifetime..."

This is beyond parody. Residents in Rotherham are bravely fighting the construction of a …Primary School Assembly Hall.  Their worry?  It would host school plays, community classes, and could mean more congestion. Now the application has to go before a planning committee.  Whether your child’s Nativity play goes ahead is now at mercy of the local council. If building a SCHOOL HALL needs a fight, imagine trying to build anything else. We have the RADICAL OPINION that we should say yes to a school hall. What do you think?

The actual story here is that the center-left, centrist, and center-right candidates all make the race competitive, while far-left Melenchon gives Le Pen an absolute blowout.

Fuck it, while everyone is rioting anyway, might as well push through the reforms. You can't really riot twice at the same time.

Private donations raised the $30,000 needed to renovate Syria’s historic Al-Hamra Theatre in Damascus. It reopened in September under actor and director Nawar Bulbul, who has ambitious plans to usher in a new era of Syrian theatre. His conviction that artistic expression – including its political dimensions – should be free will now be tested on the public stage. syriaintransition.com/en/hom…

Today, Hamas imposed a new tax of around $3,500 per truck entering Gaza, calling it a “community contribution.” Merchants will pass that cost on to consumers, forcing people in Gaza to pay even higher prices.
Do those in the West who support Hamas while claiming to care about Palestinians know that Hamas forces people in Gaza to pay heavy taxes, even when they can barely afford food? I think most of them know. They just care more about Hamas than about the people of Gaza.

Anyone familiar with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s Idlib experiment will hardly be surprised by the Dubai-style consumerist culture on display. The current approach is best captured by the title of 50 Cent’s 2003 album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’. For the 90 percent of Syrians struggling to survive, that leaves a far greater prospect of death than of riches. syriaintransition.com/en/hom…

Surely if the Mecca Defence Alliance was then just a treaty to try and scare the US into staying in the Middle East Saudi Arabia would be able to rally Turkey to its's side without the US.

Europe could have avoided the refugee wave from Syria and the resurgence of the far-right that followed it if they had simply bombed the Assad regime in 2013. The numbers could not be clearer, opposing regime change in Syria was a catastrophe for Europe politically.
Irregular crossings by Syrians into the EU continue to decrease since Assad's fall. Before December 2024, @Frontex detected around 4,000 Syrians a month at the EU's external borders. In 2025, the monthly average was 511. So far in 2026, it's 169. In April 2026, Frontex recorded just 75 detections, the lowest monthly figure since May 2011. The 2025 total of 6,126 was the lowest annual figure since 2011, and well below even the COVID year of 2020 (21,631). Detections in January–July 2026 were down 66% on the same period of 2025 and 95% on 2024. July did tick up to 373, mostly on the Aegean sea route, but this likely reflects seasonality, since more crossings happen in the summer months. Crossings also rose over summer 2025, and they remain a fraction of pre-transition levels. This is what researchers have long argued: conflict, not poverty, is the main driver of irregular migration. Syria is still one of the poorest countries in the world. Yet once the immediate threat of violence and arbitrary detention receded, so did the impulse to risk a deadly crossing. The transition has not made Syria prosperous quite yet. But it may have made it survivable, and for many, that is enough to stay.
