I'll add that we have manuscripts of spoken Medieval Turkish transcribed by traveling Christian clergy - and it's strikingly similar to Turkish as spoken today, especially to provincial dialects.

This is an unfortunate misconception. Ottoman Turkish that was unintelligible with modern Turkish due to heavy use of loanwords was deliberately written that way, as literature. Ottomans spoke to each other everyday with a language that's basically identical to modern Turkish.

Other than technical&scientific vocabulary imported from the West (primarily French) and some words revived/coined during the language reform, the spoken Turkish of the common people has remained quite consistent over the centuries.

I agree that KR heavily understates German designs but can we please stop pretending that the September Program was the centerpiece of German foreign policy? It was drawn on the back of a napkin at Germany's strategic peak and wasn't invoked in later talks.

No, a privately-discussed plan from September 1914 with the assumption of total victory won't form the basis of a negotiated peace in June 1919. It's not the same situation.

Anyhow my suggested solution is that Germany doesn't gain much in the West (reasonable, Germany didn't "win" so much as France collapsed first) but in exchange is considerably more evil in Eastern Europe compared to its current portrayal.
