Dan Campbell has a special spot in his heart for high school football.
I asked the Lions head coach if he had a message for players and coaches beginning their seasons. His answer was as fantastic as you’d expect it to be.

My annual reminder to all coaches....
Your job as a Coach is to get the program to it's ceiling. The ceiling is different at each place. This can be difficult for parents, players, coaches, and admin to understand. Work to get your program to it's individual ceiling this year.

When I was a Head Coach, I had a Player Committee who steered the direction of a lot of decisions.
One year they asked "Can we just got out to the field later, and stay out there Coach? We hate warming up, then walking back to the locker room and sitting there for 15 minutes."
So, we made the change!
Redesigned how we did pregame.
First group went out at 6:20 for a 7:00p kickoff!
We warmed up right up to the Captains at 6:52, and National Anthem at 6:56!
Kids LOVED it!!

We as coaches get wrapped up in the expectations and trying to win that we forget that those kids who just play to be part of the program or around us are the foundation of our program. Those kids we call program kids who do everything right and always work hard. Love those guys

Was on the phone yesterday with a coach who started his career in HS, moved to college and went on to win a Super Bowl.
In talking with him he had this to say, “coaches today work too much and they make their kids work too much. Go have a life and have fun!”
Interesting…

The Offensive Line doesn’t need any other position to be good. Every other position needs the Offensive Line to be good.
The most important position group in football.

Kalani Sitake
Has had a great run at BYU.
Doesn’t get enough credit and recognition for the job he’s done!
“His secret sauce is simpler than one would believe: His players are having fun. Kalani calls it the pillar of what sustains it all — joy.”
For me:
“Start enjoying your time with your players more, and let us not forget their is no better job”

When you make a mistake:
• Recognize It
• Own It
• Learn From It
• Flush It
Dont: Make Excuses. Blame Others. Bad Body Language.

Bad coaches talk too much and too loudly.
Yelling and talking more than actually teaching.
Great coaches have the ability to communicate something complex and make it simple in less words and lower volumes so that the athletes can understand and apply it.

“When you start building a program and build your foundation in toughness, that’s not an easy thing to do. It’s one thing to say, it’s another to live it every single day. Toughness isn’t about fighting people. Toughness is a mental aspect to the way you approach every day,” Brent Key
