Today's Entomology Draws and the completed cabinet! It's so nice to see them in the clean draws, brings back the wow factor for sure! 😎 🦋

All the draws I sorted from Monday and Tuesday. This is 4½ out of 10 Drawers I need to do.

More Entomology saved from the unsuitable drawers.

This week I'm moving entomology out of a nasty stiff cabinet into a much nicer, modern entomology draw. Moving collections like this would usually require a lot of paper work but luckily,
These collections are unnumbered, so i only need to make notes of where they were before. 🐛
I think I held my breath the whole way down, if broken this dome would be very hard to replace. (video is sped up)

This is the biggest bell jar case I've worked on! Last year I made its crate out of recycled wood and now we are cleaning and conserving the birds for redisplay. #taxidermy #museums
Anouther before and after (but I've turned it so not as comparable 🤔😑 whoops). Peter and I worked from top to bottom and had to keep track of which birds had been cleaned.
The Glass has been cleaned and Carrie helped me carefully return the dome to its base(quite nerve-wracking!).

This is pine marten is one of my favourite bits of taxidermy in the Ipswich museum collection. With such an adorable expression its definitely in my top 10. #taxidermy

Today I'm working on these Huia birds. The glass and birds need a clean and then I'll have to reconstruct the glass case.
At this point, i start the long process of cleaning the glass before I can reconstruct it. We use gum tape to hold the glass together, which can be removed with warter if needed. This is painted black to match the case.
Case repaired! Quite a glowup from how it looked before. This case houses two platypus and an echidna!
This has to be my favorite project of 2024: repainting puffins' beaks! I worked with a lot of references, and I'm happy with how they came out. It's incredible how vibrant puffins truly are.

Some of my work noting damage for conservation. Fingers crossed it looks the same when we reopen!

Before securing the fossil, we conducted an extensive condition report, documenting all cracks and damages. This reporting allows us to monitor and cross-reference the fossil’s condition throughout the redevelopment process, ensuring its preservation for future generations. ♥

ALT Framed fossil of an ichthyosaur embedded in a rock matrix, outlined with white markings to indicate damage. The rock surface is divided into a grid pattern, with measurements marked along the top and right edges in red. The top left corner of the frame is inscribed with "ICHTHYOSAUR DAMAGE 22/4/2024 - ASHLEY SCOPES" in white text. The fossil, including the creature's spine, ribs, and flippers, is clearly visible, showing the extent of the damage and the preservation details.
