This afternoon, I’m interviewing @Senatorpayman for my investigation into one of the most barbaric practices still permitted in Australia: incarcerated women being shackled during childbirth and immediately afterwards. I was deeply moved by Senator Payman’s powerful contribution to the Senate debate nearly two weeks ago. Having given birth herself just four months earlier, she spoke about how unimaginable it would have been to endure labour, childbirth and those first precious moments with her newborn while chained to a hospital bed. Imagine enduring the pain and vulnerability of childbirth while handcuffed or shackled, with correctional officers watching. Imagine being unable to move freely, respond to your baby's needs or hold your newborn without restraints. Leading obstetricians have warned that shackling during childbirth is medically dangerous, potentially putting BOTH THE MOTHER AND BABY AT SERIOUS RISK. In an obstetric emergency, seconds matter. Restraints can restrict movement and delay lifesaving medical intervention. It is cruel. It is degrading. It is medically unnecessary. And it is utterly indefensible. Yet the Australian Government and Opposition voted against Senator Lidia Thorpe’s legislation to prohibit this practice. Think about that. In 2026, our federal Parliament failed to pass legislation designed to stop women giving birth in chains. I’m requesting comment from Minister for Women @SenKatyG and Health Minister @Mark_Butler_MP. What do they have to say about women being shackled during childbirth and immediately afterwards? Obstetricians warn this puts BOTH mother and baby at serious medical risk. Why is this still permitted in Australia in 2026? I want to acknowledge the extraordinary determination of @SenatorThorpe Lidia Thorpe, who has driven this campaign, alongside Senators @DavidShoebridge, Fatima Payman and @Davidpocock, who have spoken out against this appalling treatment. Their fight is far from over. And neither is the fight for the women whose voices have been ignored for far too long. Being incarcerated does not strip a woman of her humanity, her right to safe medical care or her dignity during childbirth. And her baby has committed no crime. #auspol #HumanRights #WomensRights #PrisonReform #MaternalHealth #EndShackling #FirstNationsJustice #UnitedNations #sistersinside #unitednationswomen

Jailing children fails on every measure. So why do we persist? Ive found some eye-opening excerpts from this paywalled article. "Yet despite these massive outlays (imagine how we could support a child in the community and change their trajectory with $1.3 million), the evidence overwhelmingly shows that jailing is failing." Saul Easlake. Prison incarceration in Australia has surged. This is largely due to more people on remand (including for minor offences) and tougher policy/legislative settings—not higher crime rates. This creates overcrowding, higher staffing/maintenance costs, and limited access to education, rehabilitation, or post-release support. Recidivism is very high: 84% of children released from detention return to sentenced supervision within 12 months (and 45% of adults return to prison within two years). The author argues that our approach is fiscally nonsensical. Early intervention targeting a small high-risk group of young people can cut large future justice and social-service costs. Eraly intervention will reduce costs.

He's always worth listening to.
'In an address this week, Mr Kirby argued that poverty wasn’t simply an economic issue but a fundamental human rights matter that was holding people back from participating in democracy and having their voices heard. “When institutions become more responsive to the powerful than to the vulnerable, public policies inevitably reflect that imbalance,” he said. “The result is a vicious cycle. Poverty weakens democracy. Weakened democracy allows poverty to persist and even to get worse.”' [bang on] #auspol thepoint.com.au/new/261023-f…

Of course @JulianAssange is right. Sovereignty not colonialism. Europe itself is at this point a US colony.
Lula vs. Bolsonaro: I was held in solitary confinement for 1,901 days for revealing the truth about the U.S. government's killings and espionage, including against Brazil and its industries. Out of power, Lula fought for my freedom. In power, Lula discussed my persecution with Pope Francis, who decided to meet with my family and offer help. After my release, Lula and I met in Rome to mourn the Holy Father's passing. Lula was kind to my children and asked for nothing in return. In contrast, Jair and Flávio Bolsonaro did nothing and said nothing. Yet without the ability to say no to Washington and Tel Aviv, there can be no domestic policy, only foreign instructions. Those orders are always the same: "Expand our theft of resources and wages, and keep your mouths shut about us murdering children." Sellouts will surrender everything in exchange for a cut, even their own tongues.

There’s a saying: “If one innocent soul is murdered, it is like the whole of humanity is killed” Now I don’t have to tell you, there are no souls more pure and innocent than babies and children. And they’re the biggest victims of this war on Gaza; the pure souls of children, who did nothing to deserve the horror and bloodshed surrounding them and hunting them down, every day and night of their fragile life here on earth. As smart suited, politicians order their men in uniforms to go forth and destroy our humanity, the future looks over for many chidren before it’s begun.
