Her name is Cat Murphy. For some reason, The Banner story does not name her.

Merrill College students know their rights as journalists. "Cat Murphy is a master's student at the University of Maryland, credentialed as a reporter for our Capital News Service and doing the job we teach our students to do. Cat recorded openly in a public space alongside other news outlets, and that is her legal right," Dean Rafael Lorente (@DeanLorente) said. "I'm proud of how she handled herself in a difficult situation."
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

There's no expectation of privacy in a public place -- certainly not in a news conference. A newsmaker doesn't get to choose who can use his/her answer.

My pleasure to share how the great research and treatment you and your colleagues are doing is helping people/patients like me.
A special thank you to @AugensteinWTOP for taking the time to join us at #DCLung2026 and sharing his inspiring story. A powerful reminder of why we do what we do!

I guess they’re called “researchers” for good reason. How did the kind folks who invited me to speak at #dclung2026 know what shirt I’d wear and how my hair would look? Terrific day learning about latest clinical trials for #lungcancer. Thanks @StephenVLiu and @Joshua_Reuss!

Delighted to describe my experience, going from stage 4 #lungcancer to No Evidence of Disease within 6 months. Glad to offer thanks to researchers who are working on treatments, earlier screening, and ultimately ways to prevent LC. Thanks to you and @StephenVLiu for inviting me.

Inspiring to hear all the improvements and possibilities in treating #lungcancer. Discussions about the need increased (and new forms of) screening, for earlier diagnosis, when cancer is easier to treat.
Lung cancer survivor and @WTOP DC news reporter @AugensteinWTOP kindly shares his life experience with Stage 4 EGFR altered lung cancer and remains NED for the past 3 years. A vital talk to shape perspectives on what truly matters as we start #DCLung26. Thankful for meaningful translational advances in targeted treatments and growing knowledge of resistance surrounding #EGFR treatments over the past two decades. Highlights need for ongoing reframing lung cancer screening criteria to capture every person at risk for developing lung cancer early. @EGFRResisters @EgfrUk @EGFRSummit @StephenVLiu @Joshua_Reuss @AmLungCSI @ChiFuJeffYang @LUNGevity @SclcSMASHERS #lcsm
