Speaking of General Synod, here's a big debate from the session that opened on 25 October 1926, exactly 100 years ago today ... the correct pronunciation of "Canberra"! For the record, I think these days it's more CAN-brah than KARN-brah. 🧐

Happy 140th birthday to the Broughton Chair, donated to @SydneyCathedral (complete with her excellent needlework / re-upholstering) by Mrs Emily Crawley, daughter of Bishop W. G. Broughton, on 25 October 1886, to mark the opening of the Chapter House.

Which also makes it the 140th anniversary of Chapter House. The very next day, Bishop Barry sat on this Chair to preside over a session of General Synod. It proved a very sturdy Chair (not like today's ... a joke you will understand if you were at this year's General Synod!)

Remembering Archbishop Howard Mowll, who died 68 years ago today: 24 October 1958, at the age of 68. Archbishop of Sydney from 1934, and Primate of Australia from 1947. He also served as a bishop in China from 1922 to 1933.

Where it all began, 240 years ago today! “carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of chaplain” 24 October 1786: royal warrant appoints the Rev. Richard Johnson, Assistant Minister to the Rev. Henry Foster at Long Acre Chapel, London, as Chaplain of New South Wales.

My happy find tonight was Alfred Barry’s gift to his diocese - a selection of the first sermons he preached in Australia. You can find a scanned copy online, but there’s nothing quite like the real artefact!

Another great second-hand bookstore recent discovery. The classic J B Phillips version of the NT. As a bonus, this copy was gifted by none other than Howard Guinness.

The mother-diocese of Australia, 1824-1835! Long enough to have had five bishops: all took an interest in the Australian church, although none were able to visit.
Today in the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the Diocese of Calcutta in the Church of North India (United).

St Luke's Church in Liverpool. Divine service was held in this building for the first time on 18 October 1819 (St Luke’s Day), exactly 207 years ago today, and has continued regularly ever since. The oldest completed Anglican Church building in Australia (still in existence).

9 October 1890: It was noted that the new Bishop did not turn to face east during the creed! The congregation sang 'Now thank we all our God' during the procession, and later 'The King of Love my Shepherd Is.' The Choir sang the Hallelujah Chorus.

John Newton once wrote a friend who was about to publish an article against Arminianism. Newton, a Calvinist, gave some outstanding advice. Can you imagine if we implemented these instructions in our modern online Christian discourse? Here they are:
