Books, ethics, nature, law, history, these are things that interest me. But I’m constantly rage baited by the horrendous, incompetent decisions the Australian govt makes. So my posts are indignant and / or angry, because I feel like I’m being forced to defend my country.

Dunning was my professor at @Cornell during my PhD.
This paper answers why confident idiots run the world. Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy. It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.” they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception. And the results are wild. participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile. they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain. if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing. this creates a dangerous systemic loop. the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions. meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse. top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else. they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add. we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence. the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't. the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

How good is Slow Horses? I know there are a lot of people throwing nice words at it but - after finishing series 6 this week - I wanted to throw something into the praise pot. There are so many amazing performances in there. Saskia Reeve’s is stand-out as Standish, Kristen Scott Thomas is immense and - I can only fit 6 pictures on this grid but there are so many to choose from. They all play characters who are brilliant at their jobs but terrible at life. Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb is on another planet. He is desperate to look like he couldn’t care less but occasionally there is a believable flash of loyalty that makes an otherwise repulsive human genuinely compelling. His acting is so good you can smell him through the telly. You care about all the failures because you want the Slough House rejects to find a bit of purpose and meaning. It is laugh-out-loud funny but the humour never gets in the way of the danger or the drama. A wince can be seconds away from a cackle. It also has just the right level of complication. There is a lot going on but it doesn’t keep stopping to explain to the audience what is happening and, even though there is international spy stuff going on, there is a grubby earthiness that makes it feel relatable. The insults are top-tier and, at the heart of it, it’s about people who have been written off realising that they still count. 9.9 out of 10. I’m taking off 0.1 for all the swearing 😂 Bring on season 7 🎯

If you’re a Tolstoy fan—and I mean a real Tolstoy fan—you’re probably either a conservative or a traditionalist of some sort, and that’s because the primary feature of Tolstoy’s greatest novels is morality. In other words, Tolstoy’s novels—especially War and Peace and Anna Karenina—all have something to teach us. After all, great literature shouldn’t just tell a story but also cause us to reflect on our own lives. But the beauty of Tolstoy is that he doesn’t shove his messages down our throats, nor does he pander directly to his audience. Tolstoy teaches us a lesson in morality by inciting us to follow the lives of his characters—and to judge them for ourselves.

Men will steal a woman's best 5-10 years without remorse. It's up to fathers and mothers to prohibit their daughters from such "relationships." Zero reason to not be married after being together for 2 years, which honestly is still too long.
I knew a fellow like this. He dated and was engaged to this girl from her mid-20s till near 40; promised kids when he was “ready.” He dumped her when she turned 39. He was married with his first kid on the way within the next calendar year. Female friend has nothing.

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.
