About me (if you’re looking for all my work, please visit the link in my profile): GM! I’m Karen. The short version of my story is that Im a photographer, who just happened to pick up a lot of other skills along the way (set design, sculpting, painting, becoming an absolute detective at finding incredible locations, etc). The long version is: I was born in 1981. Only child. I miss my childhood so much. The 80s were a magical time when technology was new but wasn’t dangerous. I could play video games but still go outside. I road my bike everywhere. I got dirty. I lit fires. I trespassed. I made art. I had adventures that my parents had no clue were happening. I miss those days. There’s always good with the bad. Since a very young age, I’ve struggled with depression and the feeling of not belonging anywhere. I always felt out of place, even with those I considered friends. I submerged myself deep into the 80s culture to feel better. I found solace in submerging myself into video games, music, books, toys and movies. ESPECIALLY movies (and TV). Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Labyrinth, Legend, The Dark Crystal, Neverending Story, Sesame Street, the Thriller music video, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse- this only names a few. These few examples are what struck me about the visual culture of the 80s. It’s when people were still building real stuff with their real hands. It was before too much CGI and photoshopping. It was when I marveled at the fact that “oh wow, someone MADE that and what I’m looking at is REAL!” When I was in junior high school (7th and 8th grade- I was 12-13) my friend “borrowed” (more like took without permission) his stepfather’s giant VHS camcorder. It was bulky and daunting and had all these buttons but the selling point was that it had the ability to record 1 second intervals and that, my friends, was gold. I became obsessed with making stop animation “films”. These films typically consisted of 5ish minutes of really bad language depicted anything from music videos to people we knew to shit we just happened to make up. My friend’s room was in the attic of this giant old apartment building and that was our absolute kingdom to create. We lit shit on fire, exploded toys, used his iguana as a “monster”- those were the days. Eventually word about what we were doing caught on at our school (Parkside Junior High in Manchester, NH) and other kids wanted to see what we were doing. We made so many copies of the tapes and what we did spread like wildfire. Anytime I went to someone’s house and was introduced to their parents, I was met with an eye roll and “oh, you’re the one who does those videos”- I knew then and there that I absolutely wanted to be a visual creator. Time passed and I went to high school and walked the line between jock (I played a lot of sports) and artistic nerd (I was super into theater). When the time came to pick a college, I unfortunately could not afford going to film school (to make movies) despite so desperately wanting to. It just wasn’t in the cards (I didn’t grow up having much money- which is fine). I ended up going to UNH and majoring in English- I loved reading/writing and it seemed like the best fit for me. I absolutely hated college. I had trouble making friends, and I was extremely isolated and depressed. I had no one. I hated the classes. I hated the campus. It was four years I will never get back. Trigger warning: I started harming myself. I was scared and alone, frustrated that I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted to do. Remember live journal? I wrote about all this in that. My father saw it. It was the first time I saw him cry. I’ll never forget that. He had read about how I was harming myself, and how I, at many points, felt compelled to end my life. I turned to music. Mostly metal and hardcore. I started going to as many shows/concerts as I could. I started meeting people, people I could call friends. I started feeling good again, for the first time in a long
