📣 Nature targets are not optional – they are the law 📜
Will this Government be the first ever to break the law by missing legally binding nature targets?
The Office of Environmental Protection says a big increase in action is needed or Government will fail to comply with wildlife restoration laws.
Together with other NGOs, we’re calling for rapid action to reverse wildlife decline by 2030.

The UK Government must give more funding to Natural England to monitor protected wildlife sites❗️
The latest findings from the OEP expose what’s really at stake: wildlifetrusts.org/news/gove…

England’s protected site system isn’t failing – it’s being failed. And the consequences for nature are severe ⤵️
For decades, ministers have promised to restore SSSIs. Instead, designations have stalled, budgets have shrunk, monitoring has slowed, and enforcement has withered. Meanwhile, nature has paid the price.
This year alone, SSSIs across the country have come under pressure from damaging development proposals – from ancient woodland at Oaken Wood to nationally significant wetlands at Pegwell Bay and internationally important habitats on the Wensum.
These are not marginal cases. These are crown jewels of England’s nature network. And yet the system meant to protect them is underpowered, lacking clear Governmental leadership to implement the laws effectively.
We are calling for:
💚 A ban on inappropriate development harming SSSIs and irreplaceable habitats
💚 Properly funded regulators
💚 Closure of legal loopholes that allow historic consents to be exercised
💚 Statutory targets for protected site extent and condition
💚 A planning system that puts nature recovery at the centre
Serious failures for SSSIs spell scandal for the Government’s nature commitments. The public deserves better

The Environmental Improvement Plan is out🎉
We took the Government to court over the last one. This time, warm words won’t cut it – nature needs delivery.

This also means action across Government not just Defra. After a year of harmful planning proposals putting wildlife at risk, the new Environmental Improvement Plan is a chance to take nature recovery seriously. The public sees the urgency. Politicians must match it. (🧵3/3)

This means prioritising biodiversity and nature recovery targets and not weakening them AND including targets from the Environment Act and the Global Biodiversity Framework; reflecting UK leadership at COP15 in Montreal and commitments endorsed again at COP16 in Cali. (🧵2/3)

Monday is a crucial moment for nature in England as the UK Government prepares to publish the long awaited Environmental Improvement Plan setting out what must happen for England to meet domestic and international targets. The Wildlife Trusts want a plan that delivers. (🧵1/3)
