On October 6, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies used a nearby drone to help locate a mother searching for her child after the child wandered out of the yard through a hole dug by the family dog. Using the drone, deputies guided the mother to her child. Thankfully, the child was found, and the parents immediately began repairing the hole to prevent another escape. Video Description: Drone footage captures the reunion of a lost child with his mother, with drone pilots using the technology to guide her to him.

Recently, our Metro Air Support Unit assisted in recovering a man who died after falling while hiking and climbing in the Sandia Mountains. He was visiting from out of state and was an experienced mountaineer. The high elevation and narrow cliffside made reaching him especially challenging. Aboard Metro 4, the crew worked with physicians with UNM and Mountain Medicine assigned to our Search and Rescue and air support teams, who were lowered by hoist to reach him and carry out the recovery with dignity and respect. We are grateful for the skill and care everyone brought to this difficult mission. Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones. The Sandias’ steep, rugged terrain can challenge even experienced hikers and climbers. As temperatures drop, please plan for changing conditions and unexpected delays. Travel with others, leave your route and expected return time with someone you trust, and carry water, warm layers, navigation tools and emergency supplies. Be willing to turn back.
