4. #BCUITEChat A y9 student who returned from his manage move went from glaring at me for an hour with his book closed, to doing a page of work without me prompting him! I felt so proud. Safe to say I’ll hold onto that victory forever haha

A5 - Learn the behaviour policy inside out!! Your students will know it, so you need to know it better than them, be firm but fair, I always tell my students every lesson is a fresh start! Don’t hold grudges as students start to believe you dislike them. #BCUITEChat

A5 - I think my main fear was completely messing up a lesson in front of 30 teenagers, however, you learn from the mistakes and risk taking, reflect and move on, I always highlight my mistakes to pupils now and we have a laugh about it then move on - we’re all human #BCUITEChat

5. Behaviour was a worry before I started but observing other teachers, discussing behaviour in lectures, and planning how to use the behaviour policy really helped.

A5. I imagine behaviour will be a big topic here, so it would be good to hear from our ECTs how they approached this as a trainee #BCUITEChat

4. There are too many! One highlight was returning from my 2nd placement and seeing the excitement of students when they saw me through the classroom window. It felt like I had never left and it was nice to know they’d missed me as much as I missed them! #BCUITEChat

#BCUITEChat Before the PGCE I didn’t have much classroom experience and I remember being nervous about that. I did mentoring as a 6th form student and shadowed teachers here and there, which I think massively helped with understanding the school environment beyond student eyes

Never one for missing out when it’s BCU related, Diego also wanted in on todays #bcuitechat to say hello to existing and new trainees 🙈

Without this experience I don’t think I would’ve believed that I could become a teacher so I’m so happy I was able to test the water first. Talking to current teachers and having their encouragement made me see my potential! #BCUITEChat

A3 - I spent a lot of years working for @NCSTrust during the Summer and Autumn, before becoming a DT technician in a school, this helped me with my subject knowledge before I started my training and helped me get a taste for teaching! 😌 #BCUITEChat

3. I had a year working after graduating so I had experience of professionalism in the work place and was used to the routine of working every day.

A3 Before I started my PGCE I spent 6 months work experience in the science department of a local school once a week. It’s not an entry requirement any more, but I don’t think my PGCE would have been as successful without that initial insight before it was my turn #BCUITEChat

This is one of the reasons why I think our ISE week is a massive support to our new trainees 😊 #BCUITEChat – at Willenhall, England

I had to force myself to do this, i think i went about 6 weeks where i was doing either uni or school work every day. It wasn't healthy! I then set aside 1 day a week for myself (wellI still had the demands of my boys!!) – at East Midlands, England

#BCUITEChat 2) Set boundaries for yourself! Have cut off points for when you put work away and take time for yourself. Set at least one day a week when you choose to do nothing PGCE related. For me that was Saturday but can be any time that works for you

A2 - My top tip/s would be to enjoy the learning process, get to know people, start the assignments early and don’t be afraid to try new things in the classroom, throw yourself in and see what you’re capable of!

#BCUITEChat use the time at the start of the course to get on top of the reading you need to do. Keep working on gaps in your subject knowledge too. Make connections with your fellow trainees, their support is invaluable.

A2 I’m now a long way from being an ECT, but the thing I’ll always preach is organisation! You know how you work best, so implement a routine from as early possible and avoid the temptation of ‘I’ll do that tomorrow’ - in teaching tomorrows time is never promised 🙈 #BCUITEChat

So important to be trying new things in your training year!! Give it go, if it works great - reflect on why. If it doesn’t, never mind - reflect on why. You’ll have the safety net of someone in the room with when you’re training, so go on, give it a go 😊 #BCUITEChat

#BCUITEChat I really looked forward to trying out the pedagogies that I had been learning and reading about. The first lesson I ever taught on my PGCE was AS Level Theatre Studies 😀
