What if crops could signal when they need fertilizer? @Cornell researchers built a system where plants detect nitrogen stress and automatically trigger precise nutrient delivery, aiming to cut waste and reduce runoff. Read more: bit.ly/4aWLVwH

Fun #FridayFact! 🎉 🍈 🌱These berries just got a major glow-down! Goldenberries taste great, but the plants grow wild and too tall for efficient farming. Researchers at the Boyce Thompson Institute used CRISPR to develop compact plants that are 35% shorter and much easier to grow. A simple edit could help bring this nutritious fruit into commercial production—and shows how gene editing can boost many underused crops ℹ️ tinyurl.com/mr3629k6 #GrowingTheFuture #geneediting

Check out this great idea for taking science out of the classroom! Reach out to us if you want to learn how to host events like this to share the joy of microscopy with your community!
BTI summer undergraduate researchers took science beyond the lab and into the community at the @ithacamarket! Their interactive booth featured the Foldscope, a portable, affordable microscope, giving over 160 visitors a close-up view of beneficial fungi on plant roots. Visitors explored the symbiotic relationship between fungi and roots, learned about phosphate cycling, and discovered how current research improves soil health and reduces fertilizer use. With support from graduate students Lizzie Trost and Lena Cuevas from Maria Harrison’s lab, the booth was a huge success. Guests left with stickers, microscope photos, and a new appreciation for the hidden life beneath our feet.
