I met with Rep. David Schweikert yesterday to ensure a smooth transition. He was very gracious and I thank him for his long-standing service to our district. Our office will be ready to hit the ground running on Day 1.

This is a major reason why the many online personalities using “Dr.” in their byline but being chiropractors, PT’s, NP’s, Homeopaths/Naturopaths, PhD’s, or non-clinical docs who avoided residency to pursue influencer careers infuriate so many of us so much. What @CoffeeBlackMD ‘s eloquently recounting here is one of the heaviest, most arduous, and most important/beautiful parts of our job. If you’ve never had to sit with a loved one like this, if you’ve never had to pour out every ounce of yourself in terms of your energy/knowledge/heart into patients knowing you most likely won’t be able to save them…then, respectfully, you don’t get the same treatment from me than those of us whom have been/are in the arena. I chose outpatient PCP life, so my daily career now is no longer like this — but I was a pandemic resident with open ICU’s and know this feeling quite well. I have the utmost respect for my colleagues in the areas of medicine demanding this level of elite, uncompromising humility and humanity every shift.
Sat yesterday. Bedside. With a wife. Married 56 years to a tough as nails old guy. A fighter. But clearly losing his last match. Bad heart. Bad infection. Kidneys failed. Breathing for him. She understood he fought and was losing anyway. She sobbed as she went through her ambivalence with me. She didn’t want to let go. She didn’t want him to suffer. He’d be so mad if he knew all of the agressive things we were doing to him. Make him comfortable. Let him go HOME. She had no one to sit the watch with her. So I did. Held her while she sobbed and watch the light in her person go back to the source. It didn’t take long. Delayed me by a bit of time but I think it was the MOST important thing I did all day. I’ve long since learned very directly my limitations on life and death in my job. I know I won’t win every case, even if I always want to. And when the case is lost … The only thing left for the heart of the healer is to sit with the pain of those that love and remain and carry on. There is value there. It’s a simple thing, really. When hope is gone, all that is left is love.

One of the anti-vax movement’s favorite talking points is: “Look at the Amish. They don’t vaccinate and they’re healthier.” Well, measles keeps putting that claim to the test. Pennsylvania now has 977 confirmed measles cases, 195 hospitalizations and 5 deaths. Of those 977 cases, just FOUR were in vaccinated people. And we’ve seen this experiment before. During the massive 2014 Ohio measles outbreak, MMR coverage in the affected Amish households was estimated at only 14%. 99% of the measles cases were Amish. More than 10,000 people were subsequently vaccinated as part of the effort that contained the outbreak. The Amish religion does not prohibit vaccination. Some Amish communities simply have very low vaccination rates. And when a highly contagious vaccine-preventable disease enters one of those communities, we get to see exactly what happens. The virus doesn’t care about anecdotes, ideology or anti-vax memes. Vaccination works.

Since yesterday I’ve been grilling my husband about the Flydubai incident. He’s a commercial pilot. I threw every conspiracy at him until he snapped. His exact words: “People already calling this fake is insane.” So here’s what he said about the three dumbest theories. 1- “How did anyone get into the cockpit? The door locks from the inside.” There’s a door-release switch right next to the pilot. He can unlock it from the flight deck. Once it’s released, people on the other side can shove it open and get in. Locked does not mean sealed forever. 2- “Why didn’t the oxygen masks drop?” This isn’t a movie. Masks don’t fall because something scary happened. They deploy only if cabin pressure drops. A steep descent, even a violent one, does not automatically dump cabin pressure. No pressure loss, no masks. Simple as that. 3-“How did people reach the cockpit if the plane was nose-diving?” “Nose dive” does not mean the jet was vertical. It was pitched down, not at 90 degrees. That attitude doesn’t pin you in your seat. It throws you forward, toward the cockpit. If you get up, you’re not fighting the dive. You’re being shoved down the aisle faster. That’s it. Not a film. Not a hoax script. Just how the airplane actually works.

As a doctor, I've sat across from parents and told them the words no one should ever have to hear: a single pill laced with fentanyl took their son. That's why I worked with Republicans at the state house to crack down on drug traffickers. I'll never let politics get in the way of saving lives.

Well the JAMA study of 28 million people in France found *reduced* all cause mortality among those who are vaccinated. If the vaccine was increasing cancer rates you’d see it there. We don’t. In fact every tumor type they looked at showed a statistically significant *reduction* in incidence among the vaccinated compared to unvaccinated. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… This is strong evidence that your “hypothesis” is not only wrong but backwards. I’d love to see more large studies providing even more proof. Good science takes time though. More importantly. Epidemiology isn’t about disproving every possible association some rando on the internet alleges. You’d do better to focus your efforts on explaining real trends (e.g. why has CRC been increasing for two decades before COVID) rather than imagining ones that aren’t present.

I care less about @SecKennedy not having an MD or PhD and way more about him being a raving, rabid antivax conspiracy theorist hellbent on destroying US federal medical, public health, and biomedical research.
Let's be clear - none of the three HHS secretaries under Presidents Obama and Biden held an MD or PhD. Kathleen Sebelius (Obama, 2009–2014): Held a Bachelor of Arts (Trinity Washington University) and a Master of Public Administration (University of Kansas). She did not have a doctorate or medical degree. Sylvia Mathews Burwell (Obama, 2014–2017) did not possess a master's, PhD, or other advanced degree. Xavier Becerra (Biden, 2021–2025): Held a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Stanford University. He is an attorney, not a medical doctor or PhD holder. So - why has mainstream media made such a BFD about Kennedy not being a scientist or MD? Why do they continue to hammer at this?

We have lost our collective minds on this subject.
US child vaccination rates have plunged since before the pandemic, with kindergarten classrooms in more than 70% of counties now lacking herd immunity against measles.
