Games are won and lost up front. You can recruit and load your roster with skill guys, but if you can’t win the line of scrimmage, you won’t be able to win at the highest level.

Sean McVay says the real separator in leadership is how you handle the storms “I think the separator for the coaches and the leaders that I admire the most, because when things are good, it’s really like, how do we stay humble in the midst of that? How do we continue to be able to work and trust the things that we’re doing, but stay humble in the midst of that journey?” “But when you have adversity, when there’s storms, I think it’s so important that whether it’s you guys or players, they can look and they can be like, ‘I believe we can get out of this. I believe this is temporary because I believe that people that are in leadership positions have a vision, have a plan, that there’s an authenticity, there’s a capacity, there’s character and there’s a connection that are behind those things, and this too shall pass.’” “But when you’re in those storms, if you’re looking around and you don’t have anybody where it’s like, ‘Man, woe is me. We’re never going to get out of it,’ that’s why I respect and admire when I watch leaders, whether that’s players, coaches, or just leaders in any other space, I want to see how you’re handling the tough times.” “Because that’s when I’ve been at my worst, and I don’t want to be that again. And that’s when you’re really, the separator is how you handle the storms. I really believe that.”

DO YOUR JOB “One of the things I liked most about working for you,” Saban said to Belichick, “I knew exactly what to expect [and] what you expected from me. I worked other places and that was never, ever clearly defined. It’s amazing to me how many people work with or for someone and it’s just assumed that they know what you’d like them for them to do. I thought that whether it was the players that we brought to the team, the people that worked in personnel or whatever, you defined for them and then you let them do their job.”

Nick Saban says he brought coaches’ wives to job interviews because coaching demands family support while taking time away from home “I always brought the coach’s wives when I interviewed somebody ’cause I really wanted to see how interested was the spouse.” “And because coaching is not family-friendly. Your family has to be sort of committed to the time that you have to spend, the work ethic and things that go into the relationships that you have to build outside of your family which sometimes steal away your time from your family.” “So, if that kind of support is not there, that makes it much more difficult for someone to do their job.”

RIP Coach Ditka. All time Football Guy. The few times I got to meet/interview him were such a thrill. He was the definition of swagger and aura. Don’t make them like that anymore

Nick Saban says he had lived his entire life like he was in a hurry and didn’t even realize it “When I retired, and I don’t know if I ever shared this with anybody, I spent 50 years of my life being in a hurry and didn’t know it.” “I retired and the cars are backed up on the bridge and it goes down to one lane. In the old days, I would be the guy that passed all the cars up and cut in at the last minute in front of somebody.” “I sat there with Miss Terry in the car. She says, ‘You mean you’re not going to pass everybody illegally and cut in?’ I said, ‘We’re not in a hurry.’” “But it’s the first time when I retired that I realized that I wasn’t in a hurry. And I was in a hurry for 50 years and didn’t know it.” “I was always hurrying up to the next thing. Solve the next problem, go to the next thing. And you talk about relieving stress, that relieves stress better than anything. I just noticed it in that circumstance. Not cutting into traffic and waiting my turn.”

True professionals, true leaders, the giants in any field, whether military, business, sports, or scholarship, do not demand respect. They earn it. And because it is earned, it lasts. — John Spencer, Twenty Times I Almost Died 558-1:06:38 @SpencerGuard

Sean McVay: -jacked -wife is a 27 out of 10 -admits when he makes a mistake instead of glossing like a politician -tells reporters “I feel like I took a freaking gummy” instead of sterile LinkedIn-speak -Super Bowl champion -loved by his players -can tell you what play he called on 2nd & 4 in the 2nd Quarter of a Preseason game in 2019 -will crush it in broadcasting -amazing at being serious but you can tell he’s a blast at parties If you’re not a fan of Sean McVay you’re not a fan of life.
