There’s an interesting story behind $BALLOON, and it goes beyond the token itself. If you’ve been around the internet long enough, you’ve probably seen the Running Away Balloon meme but what you might not know is that the artwork came from Filipino artist Elmer Saflor, better known as Superelmer, back in 2017. It became one of those memes that travels far and wide, often without people knowing who created it or the story behind it. Fast forward to 2026, and Elmer is fighting to protect his work. His legal team has filed copyright lawsuits against companies including Tebra Technologies and Sumo Logic over the alleged unauthorized commercial use of his artwork. And according to Elmer, these are not the only cases, with more expected to be revealed as they are filed. Think about that for a moment. An artwork can travel across the internet, become instantly recognizable, and end up in corporate advertising while the person who created it is still fighting to protect his rights. This is what makes $Balloon more interesting than just another meme ticker to me. The project is built around supporting Elmer in his legal fight which is being done by routing the creator fees gotten from trades to wallets controlled by the artist himself, with a fundraising target of $200,000 to help fund the legal battle. What I even find more interesting is how the community is connecting a familiar piece of internet culture to a real issue around creator rights. Instead of the meme being the whole story, the community is trying to bring attention back to the artist behind it and it’s working because it is gradually drawing more attention by the day and with this momentum, @BalloonXSol will be soaring in no time. So if you’re looking for a project that has a narrative that is easy to understand with a solid community backing it, then this one deserves a closer look.
