On this day in 1985, papers reported that Reds boss Allan Clarke was set to chase Portugal international Djao from Belenenses. Ronnie Glavin had played with him when he was with Belenenses so may have recommended him. A deal didn't happen. #BarnsleyFC #Belenenses #Djao

Barnsley got lucky on this day in 1902 - losing 5-0 at Manchester City with 10 minutes of the Second Division fixture remaining, the referee abandoned the game due to bad light – this being long before floodlights. It was replayed on Monday 24 Nov and the Reds were defeated but by a much closer margin - 3-2 to City. #BarnsleyFC #MCFC @MickMcCarthyF

I've been looking for a story about Barry Murphy today. The one I found isn't the one I'd have wanted but I suspect he would've laughed about it so here goes anyway.... On this day in 1964, despite a good performance, the Reds lost 1-0 at Oakwell v Oldham Athletic. Oldham's goal was an OG by Barry who scooped it over GK Tony Wilcox - in the 'keepers 3rd appearance of 6 that he made for BFC. RIP Barry. A club legend, Barnsley through and through and a thoroughly lovely man. Your appearance record will never be beaten. #BarnsleyFC #BarryMurphy

On this day in 1919, Frank Barson was transferred to Aston Villa for a fee he later recalled as £2,850. Born in Grimethorpe, he had joined Barnsley from Cammell Laird in 1911 and initially struggled to win a starting place in the team but became the regular centre-half in 1913. He publicly disputed travelling expenses with the directors in 1919 and demanded a transfer. He made 94 Barnsley appearances and later won the FA Cup with Villa in 1920 and gained one England cap. Remembered as one of football’s hard men, he later served several lengthy suspensions. #BarnsleyFC #FrankBarson #AVFC

On this day in 1983, the Green Un focused on the promising strike partnership of David Geddis (signed late in Sept) and Tony Cunningham. Between them they had 6 goals in the 5 league games they'd played together. We never found out if it would've flourished - 2 weeks later Cunningham was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for £85,000. #BarnsleyFC #DavidGeddis #TonyCunningham

On this day in 1967, the Green Un had a feature on Ernest Dennis and a small piece on veteran full-back Bob Parker, who'd come back into the team. On the pitch, Barnsley played away at Workington who were aiming for a 5th home win in a row. It was 0-0 at half-time but Johnny Evans scored after the break as the Reds won 1-0. Oh, and there was crowd trouble involving Millwall. #BarnsleyFC

An unusual tale from the Sheffield Independent on this day in 1932. Ex-Red Jimmy Fryer, (who went awol in 1920), recommended James Turnbull to Barnsley manager Brough Fletcher and Turnbull had indeed signed. Fryer, whose name was William and not Jimmy, played 9 times for BFC before disappearing and later it turned out he'd emigrated to the USA, following a route multiple British players took to play in the American Soccer League. When skipping contracts to do so they often used pseudonyms to evade the authorities. Had he returned to Britain he would have been suspended but he never did. He went on to have a legendary 10-season ASL career, winning 3 ASL titles and 2 U.S. Open Cups, most notably for Fall River FC. He passed away in New Jersey in 1960. #BarnsleyFC #WilliamFryer

On this day in 1957, the Green 'Un commented on Barnsley's activity building an all weather pitch on the Queen' Ground. The aim was to enable part-timers to train in the evening. The piece also mentioned poor shooting being a problem - hmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔 #BarnsleyFC

On this day in 1980, Barnsley played Millwall at Oakwell in Division 3. Joe Joyce made his 1st appearance of the season and Norman Hunter played in midfield, replacing the injured Ronnie Glavin. Goals from Trevor Aylott after 28 mins and an Ian Banks penalty on 88 earned the Reds a 2-0 win. It was to be Hunter's last appearance for over 2 years - he played once more v Grimsby on Jan 1, 1983. #BarnsleyFC #NormanHunter
