I just came here to ask how a pitcher—any pitcher—gives up 11 earned runs in a game starting in the sixth inning of a game that was a 3-3 tie. It feels criminal, unless they told him he’d be wearing one for the team.

Matt Olson let Victor Mederos keep the bat and batting gloves for what Mederos described as a once in a lifetime chance to get a major league at-bat, though he was almost sent up and told not to swing. Fortunately, he talked his way into it.

Drake Baldwin said Victor Mederos used Matt Olson's bat and batting gloves for his 8th inning AB. That explains the 103.7 mph exit velocity.

EXACTLY! “We would’ve won!” is nowhere near a given with a different pitcher pitching the 9th. The WHOLE Mets gameplay would have changed with a fewer run lead. For whatever reason this concept was drilled into my head early in my fandom and never left.

Final thought as you play “what if.” If the score is 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th you get Devin Williams with a clean inning, not Brazoban making an error, issuing a walk and giving up a granny to Drake. Williams allowed 1 ER in June with 12K in 9.1 IP.

Bob Horner built a career out of being first. He was the first overall pick in the 1978 draft after an illustrious collegiate career. He was the first Braves draftee to skip the minor leagues entirely and debut directly in the majors. And he was the first Atlanta player to ever hit four home runs in a single game when he did so against the Montreal Expos in 1986. The National League Rookie of the Year in 1978 and an NL All-Star in 1982, Horner teamed with Dale Murphy to form one of the most feared power duos in the game for nearly a decade. The Atlanta Braves extend sincere sympathies to his wife, Chris, two sons, Tyler and Trent, and his numerous friends and fans across the game.
