NEWMAN BASEBALL 2026 SEASON WRAP-UP Newman’s 2026 baseball season ended with a state championship, a 30-win season, and one of the strongest all-around runs in program history. The Greenies captured the Division III Select State Championship, bringing Newman its first baseball state title since 2003. The championship capped a season built on senior leadership, pitching depth, clean defense, aggressive baserunning, and an offense that could win with both small ball and long ball. REGULAR-SEASON RÉSUMÉ Newman’s championship résumé was strong long before the state tournament. The Greenies earned major regular-season wins over Jesuit, St. Charles Catholic, Mandeville, Riverside Academy, Archbishop Shaw, Belle Chasse, Doyle, and St. Martin’s Episcopal. Those wins showed Newman could compete with and beat high-level programs across classifications, including larger schools and teams that made deep postseason runs. The 4-0 win over Jesuit was one of Newman’s biggest early statements. The Greenies also delivered a dominant 10-0 win over St. Charles Catholic, which went on to win the Division II Select State Championship. Newman added a major 5-2 win over Mandeville, along with strong wins over Riverside, Shaw, Belle Chasse, Doyle, and St. Martin’s. Those games established the foundation for a team that was tested before the postseason and prepared for pressure. CHAMPIONSHIP IDENTITY Newman’s identity started with pitching. Jack Falgoust, Christian Sauska, and Collier Villere gave the Greenies high-level innings throughout the season and repeatedly put the team in position to win. Falgoust set the tone in big games with competitiveness and command. Sauska delivered one of the most important pitching performances of the postseason in Game 2 of the state championship series, earning the win and keeping Newman’s season alive. Villere filled multiple roles, including closing out Game 2 of the championship series and returning to start Game 3 less than 24 hours later. Auggie Sauska and Peter Barras also gave Newman major contributions on the mound as 10th graders. Auggie stepped into high-pressure postseason innings and stabilized the middle of the championship-clinching game, earning the win in relief. Barras closed out the most important game of the season, entering in the seventh inning with the tying run at the plate and recording the final out to secure the state championship. Newman also defended at a championship level. The Greenies consistently made the routine plays, turned key double plays, and limited opponents’ ability to create pressure on the bases. That defensive identity showed up throughout the postseason and became especially important in the championship series, where Newman minimized University Lab’s running game and controlled the pressure points defensively. Behind the plate, Newman had one of its most reliable defensive weapons. Opponents often tested the running game early, but that usually ended quickly after Charles Wilson threw out a runner trying to advance. Those moments became part of the team’s energy. When an opposing runner reached base, there was a different kind of anticipation in the Newman crowd because everyone wanted to see whether the other team would try to run. When they did, Wilson’s throws consistently changed the inning, energized the defense, and brought the crowd into the game. The outfield became one of Newman’s defining strengths. The Greenies’ new outfield group, known as ATC, Air Traffic Control, featured George Loop in center field, Tanner Robert in left, and Malcolm Schairer in right. That group gave Newman range, athleticism, and confidence behind the pitching staff, turning balls in the air into outs and helping provide a reliable defensive backbone throughout the championship run. Robert also gave Newman a major 10th-grade contribution in left field and delivered important offensive moments during the championship series, including run-producing at-bats in Game 3. Offensively, Newman had balance. The Greenies could manufacture runs with bunts, walks, productive outs, stolen bases, and pressure on the defense. They could also change games with extra-base hits and power. That combination made the lineup difficult to defend. Atticus LaFleur’s big bat added another dangerous presence in the heart of the order, giving Newman the ability to extend innings and punish mistakes. Newman did not need one formula to win. The Greenies could win low-scoring games with pitching and defense, or open games up with deep lineup production. PLAYOFF RUN Newman carried that identity into the postseason and played its best baseball when the stakes were highest. The Greenies swept Northlake Christian in the quarterfinals, winning 4-3 and 6-1 to advance to Sulphur. Newman then delivered one of its strongest postseason statements in the semifinals, sweeping Dunham 4-1 and 8-2 to secure a spot in the Division III Select State Championship Series. In the championship series, Newman faced No. 1 University Lab and responded like a championship team. The Greenies came back with a 13-6 win in Game 2 and a dramatic 15-12 victory in Game 3 to claim the state title. The final two games showed the full range of Newman’s team: timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, pitching depth, defensive toughness, and the ability to answer pressure without backing down. Senior leadership helped define the championship run. Newman’s older players gave the team stability, toughness, and confidence through a demanding schedule and a pressure-filled postseason. That leadership showed when the Greenies responded after setbacks, stayed composed in tight games, and delivered their best baseball when the season was on the line. THE NEWMAN COMMUNITY As the season grew bigger, so did the Newman community around the team. What started with four or five key senior students supporting the Greenies grew into something much larger by the postseason. By the time Newman reached the biggest games of the year, the student section, parents, alumni, and families had become part of the team’s identity. At Avenger Field, Newman’s home field, the wall of parents and supporters along the right-field line became one of the defining images of the season. They celebrated every big hit, every strikeout, every defensive play, and every momentum swing. The energy built throughout the playoff run until the crowd felt like part of the game itself. That support mattered. Newman’s championship run became more than a baseball story. It became a school story. The team brought the community together, and the community gave the team a home-field energy that followed it through the postseason. By the end of the year, the Greenies were not just playing for one another. They were playing in front of a fan base that had grown into one of the most visible and memorable parts of the season. CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES NUMBERS The championship series reflected the team’s full identity. Newman scored 30 runs on 27 hits across the three games and generated 46 baserunners compared to 38 for University Lab. The Greenies combined timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, disciplined at-bats, strong defense, and clutch pitching to finish the job. Newman also controlled the bases and minimized University Lab’s running game throughout the series. That advantage became especially pronounced in the decisive Game 3 championship clincher, when Newman stole six bases while University Lab did not record a stolen base. By the end of the series, Newman finished with six stolen bases compared to just one for University Lab. Several individual performances stood out during the title run. Malcolm Schairer delivered a huge championship series, finishing 6-for-10 with a triple, four RBIs, and a .545 on-base percentage, including a 4-for-4 performance in Game 3. Falgoust was one of Newman’s most dangerous offensive players throughout the series, finishing 6-for-11 with four doubles, five RBIs, and a .615 on-base percentage. Wilson went 5-for-11 with a home run, a double, six RBIs, and a .538 on-base percentage while continuing to provide major defensive value behind the plate. LaFleur provided another powerful bat in the lineup and finished the championship series with a .500 on-base percentage. Robert, Singer, Loop, Christian Sauska, Villere, Auggie Sauska, and Barras all contributed in meaningful moments. SEASON AWARDS Most Valuable Player: Christian Sauska Sauska’s value showed up in every phase of the season. He gave Newman key innings on the mound, produced offensively, and delivered in one of the biggest moments of the year by earning the win in Game 2 of the state championship series. Best Defensive Player: Charles Wilson Wilson controlled the game from behind the plate. His receiving, game management, leadership of the pitching staff, and ability to shut down the running game gave Newman a defensive edge throughout the season. Best Offensive Player: Jack Falgoust Falgoust consistently set the tone offensively and delivered in major moments. His championship series production, including four doubles, five RBIs, and a .615 on-base percentage, reflected his importance at the top of the lineup. Coaches’ Award: Collier Villere Villere filled whatever role Newman needed. He contributed defensively, offensively, and on the mound, including pitching on consecutive days in the championship series. His versatility and toughness made him one of the team’s most valuable pieces. By the end of the season, Newman had proven it could win every kind of game. The Greenies had senior leadership, frontline pitching, dependable defense, aggressive baserunning, small-ball execution, and enough power to change games quickly. With ATC locking down the outfield, key 10th graders contributing in championship moments, a deep pitching staff, a catcher who controlled the running game, a lineup that could pressure opponents from top to bottom, and a community that rallied around the team, Newman put together a complete championship season that belongs among the best in program history.
