This is extremely alarming for Canada.
"Businesses are closing and no one wants to replace them."
There's a good reason many entrepreneurs like myself support basic income. It lets people take risks and boosts local business revenues — the backbone of economic dynamism.

If Alberta's fund had been managed like Alaska's permanent fund, it would 15 times larger than today and could've paid $101.5B in dividends to Albertans, or ~$1,000/yr/Albertan since 1976 (inflation-adjusted).
The province spent away most of the people's resource wealth.
For decades, Alberta's Heritage Fund has been a case study in the squandering of common natural resource wealth, often compared to Alaska's (~$80B) and Norway's (~$2T) much larger oil funds that invest on behalf of citizens.
"The Smith government intends to build up the provincial Heritage Fund to $250-$400 billion by 2050 in order to reduce the government’s dependency on oil and gas revenue. The fund currently stands at $26 billion, so there’s work to be done!"
This renewed mandate is a promising sign, and it should be underpinned by a collective understanding that non-renewable resources are a shared inheritance that should benefit not just current, but future generations too.
As Jack Mintz writes: "Stabilization is not the Heritage Fund’s only objective. So is intergenerational equity. Resources taken out of the ground and sold are gone for good."
This is arguably one of the most important problems of our generation for Canada and the provinces to get right.

The idea that basic income discourages work and causes inflation has been debunked for years. It improves the economy and encourages work.

Some quotes from tonight's UBC local democracy & housing event:
"We have 2 sets of housing systems, one for Indian people on Indian reserves, and another for everybody else.
One of them is designed explicitly to generate wealth, and that's it. The other is designed to create poverty.
It’s not that our housing system creates wealth that's the problem, it’s that we pretend the housing system is going to produce affordability.
Our governments don’t want our housing system to do anything else but create wealth.
If we want to build affordability into our housing system, we can’t expect the profit wealth- generating system to produce that for us."
