Social media is overflowing with motivational quotes, but the world severely lacks truly motivated people. Talk is talk and it’s easy to post the words, much harder to live them. True motivation is intrinsic. Find yours, protect it & use it to fuel purposeful actions that matter.
As October closes, Hoops season is here. I look forward to the games, the practices, the building of young men. The goal is To be Better everyday. For each player this is different. Teach Respect and Integrity. Keep a single standard for all. & what I have learned over 30 years..
8. Engagement and Development start with Love. Love comes from Enjoyment. Enjoyment = Fun (this doesn't mean all games and being soft. Build competition. Make them WANT to be there)
7. Attitude and effort. Giving your best on both of these can make up for lots of deficiencies in a game.
6. There is Nothing New and you Don't Know it all. The only thing that changes are the individuals and how you teach
3. Culture is Huge. Be what you preach. All ages can see hipocrasy and double standards. Older players especially

Your habits reveal your values. Coaches/parents/players can talk about development, accountability, effort & doing things the right way. But what do your daily actions actually reinforce? Culture isn’t something you preach. It’s what you consistently practice, tolerate & reward.

Be great without being high maintenance. Show up on time, wear the right gear, be coachable, support your teammates & give 100% every practice & game. High maintenance is hard. Coaches love low-maintenance players who buy in & make the process fun. You’re what makes coaching fun!

Running around on this Friday morning, just thinking about how life is a dream. Your blessings, your challenges, your family, friends, perception of time flies sometimes with no understanding.
But in the end it's all part of who you are & where you are going. Enjoy the moments

10 Inconvenient Truths of Coaching
1. Not every kid wants to be great.
2. You will often be misunderstood.
3. Some parents care more about playing time than team success.
4. Your best players aren’t always your best leaders.
5. No system works without buy-in.
6. Success brings criticism, too.
7. Culture isn’t built in a week; it’s built daily.
8. You can’t coach every player the same way.
9. Wins don’t always reflect your impact.
10. The job takes more from you than it gives… until years later.
Still worth every second.
Still a great profession.

Some coaches don’t realize that they’re the problem. A player loses their love for the game, starts thinking about quitting. Then a new coach, a new culture & the spark returns. They didn’t change, but their environment did. Coaches, you can be the reason they quit or love again.
