Not a good move. AI weapons are spreading fast, from drones to ground vehicles and submarines. Anna Hehir of Future of Life Institute @FLI_org warns that in a world this tense, it takes just one algorithmic error to spark a chain of events between nuclear powers. She is also clear that a treaty would make a real difference. We never thought we would ban chemical and biological weapons, and we did. Haven’t seen the full film yet? If European leaders worry about Trump's retaliation if they invoke their blocking statute to limit Trump's sanctions against the International Criminal Court, they should remember their economic “bazooka,” which stopped his threats against Greenland. trib.al/ekZ8IV8

What happens when cartels get AI weapons? “Imagine if there’s access to it by rebels, by terrorists. This will be a catastrophe.” Dr. Lansana Gberie, UN Ambassador of Sierra Leone, Paula Peraza Aguilar, Costa Rican diplomat, and Alexander Kmentt, Austrian diplomat, warn that without rules, AI weapons won’t stay in the hands of states. It’s still fascinating to hear people say “international law is useless” when the biggest military power in the world is this openly terrified of it.
Today, the Trump Administration is sanctioning the ICC. This action should encourage our Allies within the Court to work for solutions to end this threat to U.S. sovereignty forever.

The UK stands with the International Criminal Court and we stand united with our partners in strongly disagreeing with sanctions imposed on the Court. The ICC must be permitted to continue its critical work holding perpetrators of the most horrific international crimes to account.

Hind Rajab Foundation is doing extremely important work, aiming to enforce international law around the world.
In a report by Swedish television, Israeli soldiers complain about our work at HRF and portray themselves as victims. They seem outraged by the idea that they could be held personally accountable for a genocide they continue to justify. Watch till the end.

Come on, Canada! Join the conversation at the #TPNW review conference.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is supported by more than 100 countries, but not Canada. I asked the government whether Canada intends to send an observer to the treaty’s first Review Conference at the UN in December. I’ll be following up for an answer. #TPNW

Vous n’êtes pas d’accord, monsieur Lapierre ? ❤️❤️ these kids

A while ago I randomly watched Drive to Survive, despite motorsport being the most boring sport I could think of. I got hooked (& now I'm a cursed ferrari fan) It made me think, can we find a way to make UN negotiations a bit more interesting by letting people in on the inside?

UN conference rooms are not quite as glamorous as the Grand Prix in Monaco and drafting paragraphs is not perhaps as thrilling as an overtake at 350km/h. But I've been really fortunate to work with a group of talented people that are taking people behind the scenes at the UN

“The greatest risk is just that we unleash this technology that we don’t know how to turn off, that we can’t control, that we can’t predict what it’s going to do.” @BeaFihn, who led the campaign which won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize, backs our bill to ban superintelligent AI:

This is a welcomed initiative at a crucial time but as so many #UNGA appeals or launches of new groups, it lacks a plan of concrete steps to take. Stubb and Støre mentions killer robots using AI for lethal attacks as a specific reason for this initiative. politico.eu/article/20-count…

The real test for these 20 states comes in Nov. At the CCW RevCon, states can launch negotiations on legally binding rules for autonomous weapons. The US, Russia & Israel remain firmly opposed to new binding rules and are working hard to stop any governments from moving forward.

Støre, Stubb & others must give their negotiators clear instructions: don’t allow a few countries opposed to rules to set the ceiling for everyone else. Secure a mandate to negotiate a new treaty—and, if consensus is once again used as a veto, take negotiations elsewhere
