After two and half years with @NebPubMediaNews, I have taken a new position outside of journalism.
Thank you to those who engaged with my reporting on the radio, online and through our podcast.
This was not an easy decision to make, but I know that Nebraska government reporting is in good hands with @fredmknapp, @ZachWendling2, @4nsmiley, @ErinBamer, @joshdauzreyes, @ChrisDunkerLJS, @andrewwegley, @John_Grinvalds, @thedarshadodge and others doing impressive work.
I also want to thank my former colleagues at @NebPubMediaNews, including @LincolnBizBuzz, @jackie_ourada, @PealJolie, @ABonderson, @heymooly, @macy_byars, @BillKellyReport, @liloomis and @JessWade_news. I encourage you to follow their reporting and support public media.
Making my brief reappearance on social media to highlight a conversation in which I talk about not posting on social media as a journalist all that much. Thanks to KZUM radio for the opportunity and @4nsmiley for representing our Nebraska government press corps well!
NPM’s @BeachBrian17 and I joined KZUM to chat about how to navigate covering today's politics — making the case for objectivity.

LB677, a bill meant to regulate medical cannabis in Nebraska, failed to make it out of the Legislature's General Affairs Committtee on a 3-5 vote, with conservative senators in opposition. But Sen. John Cavanaugh says he doesn't think the bill is "necessarily over" this session.
.@TeamPillen signed the 340B Contract Pharmacy Protection Act into law today. The bill keeps pharmaceutical companies from restricting access to discounted drugs for hospitals serving rural and low-income populations.

Learned a ton about Nebraska's number one industry (beef cattle) while visiting southwest Nebraska for this story. Read on to learn about the state's brand inspection law and how a change could impact ranchers and feed yard operators in the state.
Feedlot owners in most of Nebraska have to pay brand inspectors to ensure the proper ownership of cattle. A bill in the Unicameral aims to get rid of the requirement.

#NELeg approves Sen. Kathleen Kauth’s proposed rule change to eliminate “present not voting” on final reading and cloture votes, on a vote of 31-17
I spoke with Sen. Myron Dorn about his amendment to raise state senator pay to $30,000. Nebraska legislators are currently paid $12,000 annually, a rate first set in 1988.
Nebraska state senators could see their salaries increased under a constitutional amendment introduced in the #NELeg.

Several protestors were removed from the Governor's Hearing Room during the Stand with Women press conference, prompting members outside to begin chanting "Trans rights are women's rights." A Nebraska State Patrol member told protestors told them they couldn't continue. #neleg
Meanwhile, in the governor's reception room, a mix of supporters and opponents of the bill watch the press conference on a small monitor.
The winner-take-all debate has returned to the #neleg. Hear what the bill's introducer has to say about the chances of it passing this session 👇
Sen. Loren Lippincott introduced winner-take-all legislation on behalf of Gov. Jim Pillen in the Unicameral on Thursday. Pillen listed it as one of his legislative priorities for 2025.
