Welcome to Being a Human: positive, educational notes on body, mind, nature, and a life well lived.
New ideas and real, cited quotes here most days. The free letter goes deeper: beingahuman.net/newsletter
How much protein do you actually need?
For most healthy adults, a common floor is about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight a day — roughly 7 grams for every 20 pounds. Many people already hit that with ordinary meals.

Friday question:
What's one thing you noticed this week that made you feel more human — a walk, a meal, a book page, a conversation?
One line is plenty. Someone else might need the same reminder.
"Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things."
— Epictetus, Enchiridion 5, tr. Elizabeth Carter (1758)
A hard day often starts in the story we tell about it. Change the story, and the day gets lighter.
You don't need exactly 10,000 steps a day.
Research found benefits kept growing up to about 6,000–8,000 steps for older adults, and about 8,000–10,000 for younger ones. Any increase helps.

Why do leaves change color in the fall?
As days shorten, trees stop making chlorophyll, the green pigment. As it fades, yellows and oranges that were there all along finally show through. The reds are made fresh in autumn.
What's the best fall color you've seen this year?
A question for tonight:
What's one thing you learned this year that changed how you see the world?
Big or small, a fact, a skill or a lesson from someone you met. Share it below. Someone else might need it.
A short nature note for November:
Before winter, many trees pull useful nutrients back out of their leaves, then seal off each leaf stem. Dropping leaves helps them save water while the ground is frozen.
Letting go is part of how they make it to spring.
"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."
— Annie Dillard, The Writing Life (1989)
Takeaway: a good life isn't built someday. It's built in ordinary Mondays like this one.
Halloween night question:
What's a small tradition you keep every year, and why does it matter to you?
One line is plenty.
A small habit with real research behind it: a 10-minute walk after dinner.
Working muscles use some of the sugar from your meal. Bring someone along and make it a time to talk.

"Our life is frittered away by detail. … Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity!"
— Henry David Thoreau, Walden ("Where I Lived, and What I Lived For")
What's one small thing you could set down this weekend?
Is walking enough exercise?
For many people, mostly yes. A daily walk does a lot for your heart, mood, and thinking. But there's one big thing it misses, and it's easy to add.
