We crossed the US to track the impact of the abortion bans for my latest doc: "The A-Word". We met women left bleeding out in ER, who were forced to give birth to partially-formed babies after enduring life-threatening pregnancies, who are now infertile👇independent.co.uk/tv/news/ab…

Hard-won success in efforts to stop women and babies dying in childbirth have faced a serious setback with recent cuts to foreign aid - with the trend now reversing in some countries, new figures show. On International Mothers’ Day, chief international correspondent Bel Trew reports from the Central African Republic, while Nick Ferris in London examines the data. independent.co.uk/news/healt…

#Lebanon: The Israeli military’s obstruction of medical crews from rescuing wounded civilians is a brutal and recurring crime we have already witnessed in Gaza and now again in Lebanon. Amal Khalil, an unarmed journalist, remained trapped under the rubble for more than seven hours while the Red Cross and Lebanese military was prevented from reaching her. This murder must be a wake-up call for the international community to enforce international law, urgently investigate Israel’s 262 killings of journalists and media workers across the region, and hold all those responsible to account.

#Lebanon: Urgent! RSF calls on the international community to immediately pressure the Israeli army into allowing the rescue of Al Akhbar journalist Amal Khalil, currently trapped near Tayri in southern Lebanon following an Israeli airstrike close to her vehicle. Her life is in danger right now! Continued Israeli airstrikes are preventing rescuers from reaching her.

#Lebanon: CPJ calls on Israeli forces to immediately ensure the safety of Lebanese journalists Amal Khalil and Zeinab Faraj, reportedly trapped in Al Tayri following an Israeli strike. Reports that the military is blocking Red Cross access is unacceptable and may constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian obligations. CPJ demands immediate humanitarian access, guarantees for their protection, and their safe, unhindered evacuation without delay.

The U.S. Department of State is aware of the reported kidnapping of an American journalist in Baghdad, Iraq. The State Department previously fulfilled our duty to warn this individual of threats against them and we will continue to coordinate with the FBI to ensure their release as quickly as possible.   An individual with ties to the Iranian-aligned militia group Kataib Hizballah believed to be involved in the kidnapping has been taken into custody by Iraqi authorities. Iraq remains at a Level 4 Travel Advisory and Americans are advised not to travel to Iraq for any reason and to leave Iraq now.   The State Department strongly advise all Americans, including members of the press, to adhere to all travel advisories.

I can confirm U.S. Government has been working very hard across multiple agencies and departments. They acted immediately. Extremely grateful for former colleague and current public servants for their efforts.

🔴 Here is a copy of the map published by the Israeli army around 3 p.m., when they ordered the complete evacuation of Beirut's southern suburbs in preparation for impending bombings. The blurred outlines of the map posted by the Israeli army make it impossible to precisely determine the perimeter of the areas threatened by bombing. It is impossible to determine whether these outlines are limited to the administrative boundaries of the neighborhoods in Beirut's southern suburbs that are usually targeted or whether they appear to extend into other areas.

I was also laid off from @washingtonpost in today's cuts. I am incredibly proud of the work my colleagues and I did, including our unflinching coverage of the Gaza war -- which still hasn't ended for Palestinians there. Please, readers, support the journalism this world needs.

Hi @JeffBezos, what you did today to the Washington Post is a monstrosity. It should be criminalized. Maybe Amazon is a shopping mall, Blue Origin a travel agency, but the Post isn’t a utility. It’s a legacy, a piece of history, an American institution. If you don’t respect that and can’t be trusted to sustain it, you should hand it over to someone who does.

Heartbroken to have been laid off by The Washington Post today. It has been the honour of a lifetime to work with these colleagues for a decade, from Damascus to Baghdad, Derna to to Bakhmut. I am proud of our work. Thank you, everyone.
A staggering statement from former Washington Post editor Marty Baron: "This ranks among the darkest days in the history of one of the world's greatest news organizations."

Feel so incredibly privileged to have spent 13 years as a foreign correspondent at the Washington Post. What a wild run: Lebanon, Iraq, Jerusalem and Berlin and so much more. Thank you to everyone that trusted me to tell their stories.
