When the crew of N722BD decided to climb from 35,000 ft to 37,000 ft in icing conditions, instead of descending, their fate was sealed.

Based on aircraft dimensions, using a simple calculation, the Lear 60 was doing over 1400MPH when it hit the ground. Almost twice the speed of sound. 😯

Lear 60 hit the "Coffin Corner" on their way to 37,000 feet. 😥

Lear 60 is a high performance light jet that typically carry 2 pilots and 6 passengers. This aircraft had 9 people on board. So its safe to assume it's over loaded. When they encountered severe icing at 35,000 feet, instead of turning around and getting out of the weather system, they tried to go higher to 37,000 feet, which was a bad decision. Cloud tops in the region at the time were all the way to 45,000 ft. Aircraft was already pushing past its max performance capabilities. Likely the anti ice system got overwhelmed, wings got icing and lost lift. Then the aircraft entered whats called an over speed condition which they could not get out of. RIP 😢
