From the #Gr8:
ALT My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL. I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it’s the right decision. It was important for me to make this announcement before our first home game, so I have the chance to thank all the people around the game, everyone who has been so important to me and my family and helped me through good times and tough losses. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything I have in my life without them. I am excited about this season with my teammates, and we will do everything we can to make this year special. I am going to enjoy every moment with my family, my boys, our fans and everyone who has been part of my hockey career. See you Wednesday, babes!

Field hockey: Severna Park claims a thrilling 4-3 win over Kent Island. Grace Redmond's second goal of the game proves to be the winner. KI scored with a minute left and then had a corner in the last play but the shot bounced just wide.

Barry was my best friend at ESPN. A big brother figure of rock solid values. I am shook to my core. Barry gave his life to hockey and some of his ESPN family, like me, learned of his shocking death today while at a hockey rink in Las Vegas preparing for the upcoming season. Chilling and fitting--the rink was Barry's home. A more beloved ESPN institution there has not been. We love you, Barry. Forever.

Madison Ferrara, a Coppermine Girls Academy U15 and U19 soccer coach, is stepping off the soccer pitch and into the boxing ring for the first time.
Ferrara, who also works for The Ulman Foundation, an organization that supports young adults and their loved ones impacted by cancer, has been training at Unboxed Boxing and Fitness in Lutherville for months to compete on the foundation’s behalf in Haymakers for Hope's Beltway Brawl VII, a series of sanctioned boxing matches that will take place Sept. 16 in Washington, D.C.
As Ferrara has trained with her boxing coach, cancer survivor Inbal “Innie” Neun, their relationship has blossomed into a special bond that extends beyond the ring.

The grass at this year's World Cup has traveled farther than some of the fans.
Half of this year's tournament stadiums were built with artificial turf for football, so FIFA had to bring in natural grass to transform them into soccer pitches. That meant growing custom hybrid grass on farms, trucking it hundreds of miles across multiple states, and maintaining it—sometimes under stadium roofs with artificial lights.
TIME senior sports correspondent Sean Gregory went behind the scenes at Los Angeles Stadium, to see what it takes to prepare one of the world's most important playing surfaces.
