Today Oct 25. #OTD in 1811 mathematician Evariste Galois was born. Determined a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals. His work laid the foundations for Galois theory and group theory. See my book "The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved."

Our picture of the atom changed six times in 2,400 years, and each change was forced by a measurement the previous picture could not explain.
Democritus argued for atoms on reasoning alone. Dalton made the idea scientific, Thomson found the electron, and Rutherford's team fired alpha particles at gold foil and saw a few bounce straight back. That ruled out Thomson's pudding model and put the mass in a tiny nucleus.
The neutron came late because it has no charge and leaves no track. Chadwick found it in 1932 by its effect on other particles. Quarks, which make up protons and neutrons, were proposed in 1964 and first seen in scattering experiments in 1968.

Today Oct 24. #OTD in 1632 microbiologist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was born. Commonly known as "the Father of Microbiology", and one of the first microscopists. Best known for his contributions toward the establishment of microbiology as a scientific discipline.

La velocidad lineal es el producto de la velocidad angular (rotación), constante, por el radio, variable. Así, v es máxima en el ecuador y cero justamente en los polos 🌎.

Today Oct 23. Celebrated annually (written as 10/23 in the U.S. date format) from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. as Mole Day. The numbers match Avogadro’s number (≈ 6.02 × 10²³), which defines the number of atoms, molecules, or particles contained in one mole of a substance.

Happy Mole Day! Join your #chemistry friends to celebrate Avogadro's number #OTD 10/23! 🥳 #MoleDay #NationalChemistryWeek
Avogadro's number is huge! 6.02x10^23, or 6 followed by 23 zeroes, almost a trillion trillion! In contrast, the body only has around 37 trillion cells.
Avogadro's number of *anything* is one mole. It's the chemist's dozen!
In chemistry, one mole of an element or compound is equal to its molecular weight. In other words...
2 grams of hydrogen is 6.02x10^23 H2 molecules
18 grams of water (0.63 oz) is 6.02x10^23 H2O molecules
197 grams of gold (~7 oz) is 6.02x10^23 Au atoms
One dozen large eggs weighs 1.5 pounds...
One Avogadro's number large eggs weighs 34 quintillion metric tons! (34 x 10^18 tons)
