🚨 HE WAS SACKED DAYS BEFORE HIS FORMER BOSS WAS MURDERED. FORENSIC EVIDENCE LATER LINKED HIM TO THE CRIME SCENE.
On February 11, 2024, Eric Johnson, the owner of Royal Cosy Hills Hotel, popularly known as Jirapa Dubai, was found dead in a pool of blood inside his private residence on the hotel premises.
A case that shocked Ghana would later lead to a murder conviction and a life sentence.
HOW IT HAPPENED
According to the prosecution, Johnson was attacked in his residence during the night. A ladder was reportedly found around the wall, while his car key and vehicle were missing. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned at Jirapa Zongo.
THE ARRESTS
Police initially arrested several hotel employees as investigations began. Elisha Mahama Akpanichie, a former Human Resource Manager at the hotel, was later arrested after leaving Jirapa.
As the investigation progressed, some suspects were released. The case eventually went to trial against Mahama, Belinda Miller and Kweku Kumbata.
WHAT DID THE PROSECUTION SAY?
The prosecution told the court that Mahama had been dismissed from the hotel shortly before the murder.
It alleged that he used a ladder to scale the wall surrounding Johnson’s residence and made calls asking about the location of the master key to Johnson’s room.
The prosecution further alleged that after the attack, money and the deceased’s car key were taken, and the vehicle was later abandoned at Jirapa Zongo.
THE FORENSIC EVIDENCE
Investigators reportedly found fingerprints and bloodstained footprints at the crime scene that linked Mahama to the incident. Phone records were also presented as part of the prosecution’s case.
The prosecution further raised questions about an injury on Mahama’s finger and the different explanations he allegedly gave about how he sustained it.
WHAT ABOUT THE CHIEFTAINCY RUMOURS?
Before the case reached trial, unconfirmed rumours attempted to link the murder to chieftaincy issues in Jirapa.
However, the prosecution’s case at trial focused on the evidence it said connected Mahama to the crime scene. The chieftaincy rumour was not established as the motive in the court proceedings described in the reports.
WHAT WAS HIS DEFENCE?
Mahama denied murdering Johnson. His defence challenged aspects of the prosecution’s account, including how the alleged entry into the residence took place and the handling of some forensic evidence.
THE FINAL JUDGMENT
On October 15, 2025, a seven-member jury unanimously found Elisha Mahama Akpanichie guilty of murdering Eric Johnson.
The Wa High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment, to be served at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison.
Belinda Miller and Kweku Kumbata were acquitted and discharged because the evidence against them was insufficient.
Mahama maintained his innocence, and his lawyer indicated an intention to appeal. I have not found a confirmed report establishing that the conviction or sentence has been overturned.
This case highlights how forensic evidence, telephone records and police investigations contributed to a conviction in one of Ghana’s most widely reported murder cases.
