Al Nakba translates to "The Catastrophe" in Arabic. The day commemorates the events which took place in 1948, when 750,000 Palestinian refugees were created as they were violently displaced in the establishment of the State of Israel.
78 years later, the #IsraeliOccupation continues, and an estimated 6 to 9 million Palestinians still live as refugees.

🔶 The annual Military Expenditure Report reveals that we are now spending an unprecedented $2.9 TRILLION a year on armed forces, weapons, equipment, defence ministries, and military aid 🚨
The release of the report coincides with the #GDAMs campaign, organised by @DemilitarizeDay and the @IntlPeaceBureau
This year marks 11 consecutive years of growth and a 2.9% increase from the year before.
The U.S. once again is by far the biggest spender.
As healthcare, education, and social budgets shrink, it is high time the world seriously reassessed its priorities.
The world does not become safer the more we build up armies with advanced weapons to ‘protect’ ourselves; the result is quite the opposite.

On May 7, the UK will elect over 5,000 local councillors in elections that are predicted to challenge the Labour government and give more power to smaller parties like the #GreenParty and #ReformUK
Keir Starmer's record-low approval rating and the rise in popularity of alternatives make these local elections pivotal in shaping the political landscape for years to come.
🔸 The #LabourParty is projected to lose between 1,000 and 2,000 council seats.
🔸 The Tories are struggling to maintain second place. Estimates suggest they are set to lose between 500 and 1,010 councillors.
🔸 Voters are likely to use this election as a referendum on Starmer's leadership, punishing local Labour councillors for his failings.
🔸A win for Welsh and Scottish nationalist parties would create significant constitutional disputes for the Labour Party. It could even signal the first steps towards a fractured UK.
🔸 Since 2018, over 13 councils have declared bankruptcy. One-third of councils are at risk of financial ruin over the next five years, and local services are crumbling.
