An incredibly outrageous effort to intimidate an effective political opponent
BREAKING WSJ:
The Trump admin's investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar is aimed at building a case to strip her of her U.S. citizenship and ultimately deport her, according to U.S. officials and other people familiar with the probe. wsj.com/politics/policy/ilha…

Competition is obviously fierce but this feels like the most brazenly racist episode in recent American history
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he will attend Friday’s ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, despite criticism from former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said Mamdani’s presence at Ground Zero would offend him. Mamdani declined to respond further to Giuliani’s comments, saying his focus will be on the families who lost loved ones and the first responders who gave everything to the city. “I love this city. I love this country,” Mamdani told reporters.

I write in @ForeignPolicy: Jordan's true external threat isn't Iranian missiles. It's Israeli formal annexation of the West Bank and the ethnic cleansing / population transfer that follows.
To help Jordan, the US must *restrain* Israel. Stop annexation.

incredibly excited to dig into this book! @AlexGSimon and the amazing @SynapsNetwork team produced invaluable, eloquent, compassionate insights on Syria during the war, when most media attention had faded. Their insights will be invaluable for learning what comes next.
Like its cover, "Syrians in the Shadow of War" is a collage.
It binds together 32 reports by our team @SynapsNetwork, drawing on over 3,000 interviews between 2017-24.
It orders them into six chapters, each tackling a question as relevant today as ever.
Here's a preview: 🧵

How many Iranians support the Islamic Republic? In a new working paper, we answer this question using evidence from a nationally representative survey of 2,000 adults in Iran. We use the list experiment, a method for measuring sensitive attitudes. List experiments work by embedding a sensitive item within a list of nonsensitive items and asking respondents how many apply to them—but not which ones—providing a degree of anonymity that reduces the perceived cost of revealing sensitive or socially undesirable attitudes. Measuring regime support in authoritarian contexts is exceedingly difficult. Where dissent is costly, people may publicly express support for a political system they privately reject—a phenomenon known as preference falsification in the study of authoritarian politics. In our study, we find that when asked directly, 57 percent of Iranians say they support the Islamic Republic (between 55 and 59 percent). But on the list experiment, where answers are anonymous, support drops to 47 percent (between 42 and 51 percent).

A joy of Syria's transition is publicly thanking by name the talented researchers and old friends who have helped me move it forward: Lina Omran, now doing fascinating PhD research at Krems on migration and violence, and @walid_ALnofal , long one of the best journos on s.
