Norway is set to launch an unprecedented project: a tunnel carved through solid rock that will allow ships to pass through a mountain instead of sailing around the Stad peninsula on the country’s western coast. In this area, storms batter the open sea around 100 days a year. Fishing trawlers, cargo ships and salmon-farming vessels often have to wait several days before they can pass. The tunnel will stretch 1.7 kilometres between two fjords, extending to 2.2 kilometres when the entrance structures are included. Measuring 50 metres high and 36 metres wide, it will accommodate ferries and cruise ships. Led by the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the project was approved in 2021 but suspended in late 2025 due to a sharp rise in construction material costs. A revised budget of 8.6 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately €780 million) has now paved the way for its revival. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with completion expected five years later.
