IPV4 and IPv6 are both Internet protocols, but are separate protocols in and of themselves, and why is this? Even though both protocols are used for the same function of routing traffic across networks we use different naming conventions to refer to them, primarily because the protocols themselves are not backwards compatible and function very differently from one another.
