#BirdNamesForBirds - because birds don't need eponymous or honorific common names. Bird names should be about birds. After all, it’s more than McCown's Longspur

An excellent thread!
I believe I said in an interview somewhere on the subject that when I was a kid I kinda thought eponym names kinda sounded like wizard names, and honestly until I started researching them for BN4B that was still the case...
Gather 'round for storytime, kids!
Many intellectual giants <cough [bots] cough> this week losing their fecal sacs over the @AmOrnith decision to replace eponymous names for birds.
"You're erasing history" they cry.
Let's explore some history with #BachmansSparrow. 🧵1\12

Just do it. I promise you that birders can handle new names (especially descriptive ones) for their birds. All the names are new to beginners. @BirdNames4Birds
Example
(tired): Bewick was a friend of Audubon's (the latter probs owed him money).
(wired): Gray-bellied Wren

One year I promise I will genuinely get my act together and go to @GlobalBirdfair given its pretty local to me...
Also if anyone organising is reading, just throwing it out there that you could have @BirdNames4Birds and/or @SciAndSorcery material to your schedule...

Apropos of nothing, the #progressive idea of eliminating #eponymous names for wild things dates back to at least 1799.

"We could decide right now that the words we use matter, and that birds should carry their own history, not ours."
@birdnirdfoley and I wrote an oped for @washingtonpost about why it's time we acknowledge these verbal statues and need #BirdNamesForBirds.

no todos los días tu periodista científico favorito escribe un artículo para el que te entrevista y habla sobre una iniciativa a la que le has dedicado mucho tiempo y energía. y el artículo, como se esperaba, es maravilloso y profundo. gracias @edyong209!
🐦I wrote a piece about the movement to stop naming animals after people--and to remove existing eponyms.
It's a story about righting science's historical wrongs, but also about reconsidering the responsibilities inherent in naming things. 1/

Why do so many people continue to choose MM as a hill to die on? He was a bad dude who did bad things to First Nations people. He doesn’t deserve to have anything named after him, let alone such a magnificent critter as the Pink Cockatoo. More below👇

It would be wonderful if 2021 is the year @BirdlifeOz takes a stand and starts using only the name Pink Cockatoo for this beautiful bird... as we do. Removing Major Thomas Mitchell's name and its dark colonial associations from this iconic species is long overdue (Thread)
