Last week at the Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo 2026, Tessera Labs Co-founder and CEO @KabirNagrecha and Head of Customer Strategy, Jim Robshaw, brought this question to the forefront in their session:
๐๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ ๐๐๐.
As enterprise leaders look to move AI from experimentation to execution, one challenge stands out: AI cannot transform a business it doesnโt truly understand.
The session explored why ontology is essential to closing that gap. By connecting business processes, data, applications, and their relationships, ontology gives AI the enterprise-specific context it needs to move beyond isolated tasks and deliver outcomes across complex workflows.
The conversation reinforced a critical shift in enterprise AI: ROI starts with understanding how the business works, then putting that understanding into action.
Thank you to everyone who joined Kabir and Jim at @Gartner_inc Symposium for an important conversation about what it takes to turn AI's promise into measurable impact. #GartnerSYM

Why is data migration hard? Boiled down to its bare bones, the problem is one of field-level and value-level mapping, ETL (i.e., the actual compute operations), and validation.
Failure points are possible at each step. Mapping requires domain expertise and/or intelligent matching schemes, as 1:1 maps are often impossible (e.g., the CoA structures in Oracle are significantly different from those in SAP because the application layer itself has different treatments of the concept). We have seen, however, that this problem is solvable (admittedly, we had to build some complex algorithms over the last year or two).
ETL can be challenging, but is fairly tractable. Reliability, compute optimization, caching, etc., are long-standing problems with well-developed solutions.
Validation - this, in my view, is the most substantial remaining bottleneck. Received knowledge states that only business stakeholders can sign off on any particular data load, since only they understand the business to its bones. Naturally, the number of stakeholders across a global enterprise could number in the hundreds, and thus validation timelines can stretch into months. In total transparency, I think the (uglier) and real reason for requiring business stakeholder sign-off has less to do with presumed domain expertise and much more to do with forcing accountability. You will consume & operate on this data; therefore, you must sign off on it. If issues slip through, you will suffer from them as a consumer, and I do not want to be blamed.
And yet, we are increasingly hearing that the consumers of enterprise data are agents, not business stakeholders. Agents will now drive "zero-day closes". Agents will drive invoice approvals. Agents will drive supply chain operations and procurements. Then, should agents be the responsible stakeholders for business validation? Ontology-grounded agents may in fact be more reliable "vetters" than human validators who can only drive sample-based verification given time & bandwidth constraints.
Can we square the idea of "autonomous enterprise" with a reliance on full human-in-the-loop validation mechanisms? We are (for now) accepting this cognitive dissonance, but I do not believe it can hold in the long run.
In fact (and we will be able to share details soon), some of our customers have now accepted no human-in-the-loop even in business validation activities. These are not small customers in the slightest. My observation: these customers who have truly embraced trust in agents are those who see the most substantial cost & time reductions in transformation activities. In short, trust is now the bottleneck of agentic acceleration, and those who trust the most benefit the most.

An observationโฆfragmentation of policymaking and lack of international standardization is driving a tremendous amount of labor inefficiency and unnecessary costs in areas that are often unobserved by the broader public.
Global technology rollouts are hampered by the need for fit-gap analyses accounting for local regulations and methodologies. A template built in the US will hardly work for every European or Asian tax & trade regime. Meanwhile, building a global template from first principles is not an easy task.
Fundamentally, I see this as a failure of international cooperation and standardization. The problem is only getting worse as deglobalization continues. The only solution I see today that does not involve massive labor investments is the โliving ontologyโ approach. We have seen success with this in several clients living the rollout pain points today.
A side effect of this global fragmentation is the empowerment of countries with large, (relatively) unified domestic markets such as the US or China.ย A single technology platform can service huge consumer bases without needing to account for region-to-region discrepancies. Meanwhile, enterprises navigating multi-regime operations in the traditional way face costs reaching tens of billions of dollars per year in aggregate, possibly more when accounting for slowdowns in productivity-boosting technology rollouts.

AI is getting better at solving hard math problems, especially given recent drops. But what does that mean for the cryptography that protects everything from private messages to healthcare to banking and crypto wallets?
Stanford cryptographer Dan Boneh, with @eddylazzarin, @SuccinctJT, @liz_harkavy, and @smc90, makes sense of the warnings sounded recently. They cover:
- whatโs fact vs. assumption
- whatโs new and what risks cryptographers have long prepared for
- where quantum computing doesn't (and does) fit
- opportunities for builders
Highlights:

01:35 โ Signal vs. noise: What the math does and doesnโt tell us
05:29 โ Why cryptography depends on open problems
09:25 โ Why the stakes go beyond blockchains
10:43 โ How AI could strengthen confidence in cryptography
13:50 โ Considerations for users and institutions
20:10 โ Where AI and quantum threats overlap

A new chapter begins today!
Last week, I officially wrapped up my time at Turing. I'm grateful for the experience, the incredible people I had the opportunity to work with, and the chance to be part of a company pushing the boundaries of AI.
Today, I'm excited to share that I've joined @Tesseralabsai!
What drew me to Tessera is the opportunity to help tell the story of a company rethinking how enterprises approach transformation through AI. It's an exciting space with incredible potential, and I'm looking forward to helping build the brand, amplify its voice, and share that story with a broader audience.

โบ Frontier AI vs. sovereign AI
โบ Distillation & the shrinking model gap
โบ Why enterprises are moving to open models
โบ What AI safety & alignment teams actually do
โบ Reward hacking & why โif the model can figure out a way to cheat & get the reward, it willโ
โบ Super Intelligence, recursive self-improvement & slow takeoff
Watch the entire interview below.
BREAKING: The future of AI isn't open vs. closed.
We need a TON of both.
Turing CEO on why frontier AI & open-weight models are increasingly serving different parts of the AI stack.
โThere's absolutely a place in the world for Ferraris & Koenigseggs. But there's also a place in the world for Model Ys.โ
Frontier models continue pushing the limits of intelligence. Jonathan's point isn't that one replaces the other. We need frontier AI to keep advancing capabilities & open models to diffuse those capabilities across the economy.
BTW "Only 2% of US households pay for AI" It's still early.
At the same time, AI training is moving beyond benchmarks into simulated environments built for real work, as agents move from completing tasks to operating autonomously for days, & eventually weeks, months & years.
