The train accident in Spain's Toledo region, which claimed at least 68 lives, also sparked controversy among footballers. Borja Iglesias and Héctor Bellerín, known for their solidarity with Palestine and their anti-far-right positions, shared phone numbers on their social media accounts to help those affected by the accident. The two footballers shared the contact numbers of Renfe, Iryo and the Castilla-La Mancha Emergency Services on their Instagram stories, offering support to the relatives of the victims and those in need of assistance. Meanwhile, Spanish footballers such as Marcos Llorente and Dani Carvajal, known for their proximity to the far right, criticised Transport Minister Óscar Puente before the cause of the accident had been established, calling on him to do his job instead of spending time on social media. These reactions also drew criticism, as many people believed the two footballers were more concerned with the minister's political identity than with the accident itself. Puente, a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), is known for his strong opposition to the far-right Vox party and its policies. Carvajal's support for Vox is also well known.
