There is now a clear understanding that China's growth continues to rely on net exports to an almost unprecedented extent for a large economy. The YTD 1.2 pp contribution from net exports is close to the 1.5 pp of the last 2 years, but is almost certainly an underestimate

Public debt crises boil down to the difference between 'r' and 'g'. Here is where the main DMs stand
🇯🇵 The weak JPY solved it
🇺🇸 Cut spending and stop the war to lower 'r'
🇨🇦 Cut spending
🇬🇧 Bad but fiscal consolidation started
🇩🇪 Bad but low debt creates fiscal room

"It would necessarily be painful."
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee says the central bank has reached the limit of any ability to wait out supply shocks, which means higher interest rates will have to slow sectors of the economy that may not be driving up prices.
He also sees evidence that the AI investment boom is not "staying in its lane," and cites conversations with businesses who see increasing labor-market pressures for AI-adjacent industries. wsj.com/livecoverage/stock-m…

My latest memo discusses recent attempts to rein in long-dated government bond yields and why the only sustainable solution is responding to the underlying factors pushing interest rates up, even if politically uncomfortable.

“Risk-free” can be painfully expensive. US 10y Treasuries have suffered their worst 5y nominal returns in over 120yrs, Goldman shows. Inflation made the losses even uglier. The twist: after this historic rout, yields are merely back near their long-run average.

Central bank watchers now overwhelmingly expect not only a Fed rate increase this week, but a second hike before the end of the year

“We are now looking for at least a couple of rate hikes by the end of the year,” says Jennifer Lee of @BMO. Traders have put the likelihood of a federal rate hike at about 90% ahead of Wednesday’s decision as the Fed looks to tamp down inflation.

Global bond markets are on fire. Every day yields rise in one place or another. Biggest mover today is Japan, where 10y10y forward (red) is up 10 bps. That spills over to everywhere else and pushes yields up globally. We're witnessing a global sell-off...

to be fair, there have been some narrow successes -- the US auto sector hasn't faced a new China shock, the location of final assembly for computers has been moved out of China (not sure how important that is, but some view it a success) and broad tariffs do generate revenue (not a surprise). But it certainly hasn't been an aggregate success on its own terms (look at China's global surplus, China's increasingly unbalanced domestic economy, etc) in part b/c it hasn't been at all targeted in Trump 2 and in part b/c bilateral tariffs aren't that effective a tool in general.

That not just a piece of the pie. That's the whole damn US GDP pie and 25% of the global. I guess food, shelter, clothing, entertainment, military, healthcare is all gonna be free and somehow all those selling all those free things are gonna have paying jobs?
NOT ENOUGH PIE!
