Roger Daltrey sitting in a bathtub full of Heinz Baked Beans, clutching a giant can, at the 1967 photo shoot for the cover of The Who Sell Out. The album was a tribute to pirate radio, structured like a broadcast from Radio London, with songs linked by fake commercials, jingles and public service announcements, including John Entwistle's "Heinz Baked Beans." Most pirate stations had just been outlawed when a new broadcasting law came into effect at midnight on August 14, 1967, which made the tribute even more pointed. David Montgomery photographed each member for a panel of the cover, with Pete Townshend applying a giant stick of Odorono deodorant next to Daltrey on the front. The beans had just come out of the fridge, and Daltrey later claimed he caught pneumonia, flu, or the worst cold of his life from sitting in them so long. The Who Sell Out was released on December 15, 1967, and "I Can See for Miles," its only single, reached No. 9 in the US, the band's only Top 10 hit there. 🎸 "I Can See for Miles" was the Who's only Top 10 single in the US. Did you know Roger Daltrey said he got sick from that freezing bath of beans? 🎸 Captured by David Montgomery.
