Team Miles joined Brushstrokes and Strides to celebrate Coach Andrew Blanks’ 80th birthday and showcase 50 years of his artwork! A longtime track coach, educator, and artist, Coach Blanks taught at Johnston Middle School (now Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School) and Westbury High School. Throughout his remarkable coaching career, Coach Blanks led multiple championship track teams and coached Olympians Bennie Brazell and Bayano Kamani, both of whom competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Beyond athletics, Coach Blanks is also an accomplished artist whose work spans the past 50 years. As a Johnston alumni, Senator Borris L. Miles had the honor of running track under Coach Blanks. Justin Concepcion, also a Johnston alumni, represented Senator Miles at this special celebration honoring Coach Blanks’ lasting legacy in athletics, education, and the arts! #txlege #hounews #SD13

Many families in SD 13 rely on SNAP food benefits. Recent federal changes require Texas to cover a portion of SNAP costs—an estimated $770 million per year. If Texas cannot cover these costs, more than 3.1 million Texans receiving SNAP could be at risk. Urge Congress to delay the SNAP penalty included in the One Big Beautiful Bill. I joined my colleagues in the @txsenatedem in demanding answers about Texas’ failure to process an estimated half a million voter registration records over the past year. Texas voters deserve to know what happened, how many people were affected, and what is being done to ensure that a failure of this magnitude does not happen again. County election officials also deserve the resources necessary to address a backlog they did not create. The Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Secretary of State, and Governor Greg Abbott owe Texans an explanation—and a solution. Read our full letter below. Remember: The deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 5. Be sure to check your voter registration status at VoteTexas.gov. #txlege #hounews #SD13

Today, we remember one of the most tragic days in our nation’s history. We honor those we lost on 9/11, as well as the heroes who bravely stepped up and risked their lives to help those in need. Let’s take a moment to pray for the victims and the families whose lives were forever changed. May we never forget that, even in the face of darkness, unity, compassion, and courage are the values that bring us together. #txlege #hounews #SD13

SEN. BORRIS L. MILES LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR I sent a letter to Governor Abbott in response to his letter regarding the federal government's decision to withhold approval of Texas' FY 2027 Medicaid directed payment programs, which include the Comprehensive Hospital Increase Reimbursement Program (CHIRP), Texas Incentives for Physicians and Professional Services (TIPPS), and Rural Access to Primary and Preventive Services Program (RAPPS). Approximately $9.8 billion in Medicaid funding for Texas hospitals is at risk, including at least $258 million for Harris Health. Those numbers represent far more than hospital finances. The Texans most vulnerable to the consequences are our seniors, low-income families, minority and marginalized communities, uninsured and underinsured Texans, and residents of rural communities where healthcare options are already limited. In the governor's August 7 letter, he described the federal government's action as putting a “gun to the head” of Texas hospitals. But if we are going to use that analogy, then we also need to be honest about how Texas arrived at a place where that gun can be held to the head of our healthcare system with such devastating consequences. For years, Texas made a deliberate political choice not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Time and again, Texas policymakers had opportunities to expand access to Medicaid and chose not to do so. This refusal helped create and perpetuate a healthcare system in which hospitals—particularly safety-net hospitals—carry an enormous burden of caring for uninsured and underinsured Texans. We cannot continue making the same policy choices that continue to leave us vulnerable. We must: Put people before politics. Put patients before ideology. Put human life before partisan advantage. The health and lives of Texans should never be collateral damage in a political dispute. Please read Senator Miles' full letter to the governor below. #txlege #hounews #SD13

Happy Labor Day! Today, we celebrate the working men and women who keep our communities, our state, and our country moving forward. We honor the labor organizations that have led the fight for fair wages, safer workplaces, stronger benefits, and a better quality of life. The fight for workers’ rights is far from over, and we will continue to stand together and organize to protect our rights and build a stronger future for all. The Office of State Senator Borris L. Miles will be closed today, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day. The office will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Happy Labor Day! #txlege #hounews #sd13
